killing me! she thought as a fresh wave of emotion choked her chest and wrapped its arms around her neck. It was tight and it was binding, and Karla liked the feeling. Except for that she didn't want Sephira to know. She wanted then to chase her away. But the thought was so fleeting and cruel she could have just as well thrown herself off a tree for thinking it. Why does she have to be so likable? Its like she knows exactly what to say to just...get to me and pull at my heart strings. It wasn't so bad, but Karla didn't want Sephira to get too attached. Karla was sure that she was no good for the girl. She was sure that if Sephira got too attached, Karla'd just go and break her heart again and Sephira would be devastated. She couldn't possibly live with herself after something like that. Not after the girls mother died and her father left her and her aunt is dead and she was living alone at 16 (if she remembered correctly) and supporting herself. One more person that have left her, alone. Karla wouldn't do that to her. It wasn't something she'd decided consciously, she just...couldn't. Karla stood and tentatively placed her arms around Sephira's shoulders, looking to guide the woman to a safe, comfortable spot. They'd find a hospital soon, but shifting in her condition would be too dangerous, being that her injury was so severe. Karla didn't want to let go, really, but let the woman speak. Better than they'd first met? Karla shook her head despairingly, "Honey when we first met it was at the place where it all happened." her vagueness made it apparent it was still very painful, and fresh, vivid images came flashing back. She focused on Sephira. She was win pain. She needed Karla. Karla, you need to focus. The images went away but she was shaking. She'd forgotten to ground herself that time, and was lost for a few moments. The transition back into the present was remarkably smooth, "I shouldn't have gone there. I wasn't ready to go back..." she paused, and thought about it for a moment, "Though I'd have never have met you, would I?" she smiled sadly, unconsciously rubbing the womans arm. It was something her mother did for her when she was upset: rubbed her back or stroked her head until she was calmed again. Karla wondered for a terrifying moment if she was assuming a parenting role. Nah... She sighed heavily, "Thats very noble of you to say and do that for me, knowing about...this..." she positioned herself to face the girl, "But I'm not exactly the best of company. I mean, I'd rather go through hell with someone too if given the chance but, sweetheart," she stared at the woman levelly, her eyes flashed with a hint of worry, "My hell isn't something I'd ever want you to know...ever." she let go of the girl and stepped back, wanting more than ever to just accept her offer and live happily in her company. But that would be irresponsible- neglectful -on her part if she didn't warn her, or give her other options. But she wasn't going to withhold affection from her. She wasn't made of stone. "I say that only because I want you to-to have a chance at being normal, and happy, okay? And the way I'm going that wont be for a very long time," but, "But, I'll have to admit, I think you're the reason I can...survive these flashbacks. Alone? Forget it. I'd spend...d-days in my house, alone, just sitting, without sleeping, eating...anything. With you... I recover faster. But I can seek other help, okay? I don't want to expose you to anymore of this than you need." [/blockquote] [/ul]

Sephira merely stared at the woman with a worried yet saddened expression on her face as she heard what she said, "I don't want you to leave. I like having you around. I don't care what you did or what you think it might do to me if I stay with you. And as for being normal, that's impossible. I'm a shifter, normal isn't in my dictionary." She looked down at the ground, "Unless you want to leave. If you want to leave, you can. Don't let me hold you back. I'm used to being alone, you don't have to feel guilty over my past." She said as she placed her hand on Karla's leg.
"We should get going though. The guys who are after us have probably started to figure out what's going on." She got up with a wince and took a few steps following the stream, "We're in the park reserve. I built the tunnel to lead near this stream. If we just follow it this way we should reach a safe area where they shouldn't be able to find us." She looked back at Karla with a small smile before continuing walking on slowly, hoping she would follow.
She didn't want to sit around and have Karla argue on whether or not she was right for Sephira's well being. She didn't like it when she talked bad about herself. Not only that, but the pain was getting to be unbearable, so she thought maybe walking would help her get her mind off of some of it.

she called as the woman began to walk away, her voice choked. The last thing she wanted to do was leave. Ever. Actually the thought was near terrifying to the point of panicking, and Karla had to consciously keep her head straight in order to stand up and follow. "I don't want to leave, though, I mean I really don't. You're the only person brave enough to be around me, let alone take me in and you're a sweet, lovely person and I want to protect you and I want to live with you, I mean, we get along famously." she ran ahead and held her hands up as a sign for the woman to stop. "I just don't want you to have a bad life because of me."she dropped her arms and shrugged her shoulders, not knowing what else to say. She wanted to say 'I'll never leave you, we'll have a great life as roommates, we'll be the best of friends forever amen' but she couldn't. Sephira needed to know that there were other options. A sudden feeling of utter helplessness came over her, despairingly, and she struggled to breath for a moment. What if she lost Sephira, already? She reached out and put a hand on either shoulder, staring levelly at her. One thing was for sure, and that was she'd stick around until this bullshit was over for her. "And we can't travel now. I'll fight them off if I have to, you're too injured to be crawling through tunnels and I'll be damned if I let you injure yourself, or I let you get hurt."She wanted to run just as much as Sephira did, but she knew Sephira couldn't handle that kind of exertion. she knew there was something wrong with her ribs that Sephira wasn't telling. "If you insist on running, then we'll have to go over land." she decided finally. [/blockquote] [/ul]

Sephira gave Karla a weak smile as she was stopped, "I wasn't trying to sound as if I wanted you to leave, I just don't want you to force yourself to do anything due to feeling sorry for me." She gasped as a sharp pain throbbed in her side, making her wince and fall to her hands and knees. It was getting worse by the minute. Her eyes were closed shut from the pain, "And sorry if you thought I was running off. I was trying to get closer to town before I was unable to move any further. I don't want to be a burden to you out here."
Every breath was a new wave of pain. Her rib had pushed itself back towards her lung and every breath brought her closer to puncturing it. She had to slow her breathing so she didn't expand her lung far enough to hit it. She wasn't going to last much longer, she had to manage until she was able to reach town. At least there she wouldn't be a burden on Karla, the woman could easily call for help instead of having to carry her.
She pushed herself to get back up and continued on, her face starting to turn pale and beads of sweat formed on her forehead. Just a little further....

she brushed some of Sephira's hair back with a gentle hand and smiled sadly at her. "And I am not going anywhere. You're stuck with me now. I mean, you might know about all of my shortcomings as of today, but just wait until I'm healed. I'm a cheeky little bastard. no one is safe from me and my sense of humor." she chuckled good heartedly, trying to lighten the mood. Sephira was in a bad way, and it worried her. Karla had never been so scare for anything in her entire life. It was different than fearing for your own life. Karla felt as if she cared more for Sephira's well being then she did when she was in the subway so long ago. The fear was way greater. She wanted to comfort and hug her until the pain was gone but she was afraid that if they didn't get help, fast, then... she caught her breath fretfully. She could think of only one solution. "Do you have a phone?"((what else would they do? I have Xara who can, by this time, drive and all that if you want or the could call an ambulance. what do you think?)) [/blockquote] [/ul]

She shook her head, disappointed in herself. She was being selfish in not wanting to tell her friend what was wrong with herself to try not to worry her. But by doing so, she made her worry even more... "My rib's broken. It's pushing on my lung. It's hard to breath and the pain is unbearable." She breathed out, finally telling her the truth.
"I don't have a cell phone, just a house phone sorry." She stopped and looked back at Karla, "Sorry I'm such a pain." A grin crawled its way across her lips. She wasn't sure what was going to happen to her, but she was glad atleast to be with Karla if anything should happen. She didn't want to die though, she had just made a friend and from the looks of things they needed one another.

she said, a bit more scathingly than she'd like, but the meaning came through. It was out of love. She stopped and knew what she had to do then. There was a park house not far from where they were, she reckoned, as the tree line a few meters off became too organized, signalling a trail. Trails always led to HQ. "You're no burden and if I hear you say that one more time I'll break another rib to match, you understand me?" Karla was panicking. She winced as she said that and apologized quickly, "Sorry."She can't walk, thats for sure. I'll have to carry her. "I'm going to get you help." she instructed, gently bending forward and slowly flipping the girl onto her shoulder again, wrapping her arm around the womans legs so she wouldn't fall. "The pain will go away soon. Don't worry, okay? I can get us help."But she wasn't so sure the person she'd be calling would take too kindly to her after all the distancing she'd done. She'd just have to have faith that her friend would love her enough to help her. Karla managed the energy to run (hyped up on adrenaline again) through the forest and onto the path eventually, the girl on her shoulders. she kept talking to her, prompting her to respond. Light conversation. Nervous conversation, but still. They soon found a rest stop near an actual road, cars zooming past, and Karla found the pay phone. She had hardly any time to panic anymore than she was, and placed Sephira down on the bench, giving her head a gentle, comforting pat before stepping into the adjacent booth. She fished wildly in her pocket for a quarter and for a terrifying moment, thought she had lost it. Her forefinger and thumb clamped around it triumphantly and she pushed it into the slot, dialed the number, and prayed. It rang once. Twice. Three times. Four times. Five times. after the sixth time she was beginning to think she'd never pick up, but then... "Hello?" Karla's heart burst in hope, "Xara?"There was a pause on the other end, then a sleepy reply, "Karla? What...where are you? Why are you calling so late..." Karla shook her head stupidly, knowing Xara couldn't see on the other end. "Xara I need help."Another pause. "What did you do?" her voice dropped, inaudible to Sephira, "nothing, I did nothing, I need help. I'll explain later but if you don't come now...theres a girl who might not make it 'till morning out here."Xara sighed on the other end. "Where are you?" "Thank you, Xara, thank you so much! I'm at the Park Reserve, just off the highway turnoff.""M'kay. Be there in two shakes. You owe me a coffee." she added, "I'm tired." Karla smiled, "I'll do that. Thank you, Xara."Xara grunted and Karla hung the receiver up on the hook, sitting down next to Sephira and wrapping her up in her arms through the tense minutes until Xara came. Would they be discovered? Karla didn't even know what Xara was coming to get them in. she hugged Sephira close, rocking back and forth gently, talking softly to her. "Its going to be okay. My friend will take care of you, I will take care of you, it will be okay. You're safe, okay? I'm not leaving you. We'll go to my apartment, there's an extra bed there for you and everything..." she rambled on and on. Where was Xara?[/blockquote] [/ul]

Karla rocked her back and forth. No one had ever done this before. She was only half conscious at this point, although she was still able to focus on Karla's words. "I'll be okay. I'm not gonna let myself die. Not yet." She could barely breath, since inflating her lung any more than she was now meant certain doom. She tried to stay awake, because she knew she wouldn't be able to do that if she was asleep.
The pain hadn't changed, but it wore on her physical and mental being. She felt helpless. 'This must have been what she felt like earlier. Now I really do feel like a jerk for being over the top helpful with her earlier. I was just trying to be nice, but it feels awful not being able to do a damn thing.'
There was a high chance that as she grew weaker and stayed awake that she would shift again. She fought it back as hard as she could, not wanting to leave Karla talking to a bat that was unable to speak back with her. "The only reason I lied is because I didn't want to worry you. You had so much you had on your mind already and you were already scared enough. I didn't want you to have to worry about my problem on top of that..." A tear rolled down her cheek, mixing in with the sweat that soaked her face.

she smiled sheepishly, "Now I know whats wrong I can stop worrying and get it fixed. And it will get fixed, you just hang onto your human form. We can't take you to get proper help as a bat, can we?" she wiped the tear from the girls face and tried to smile, but it just didn't seem like the right thing to do. It was another five minutes, and Karla had been talking to Sephira about anything. After a while she started talking about music and how she played the bass clarinet. "It's big, it's clunky, and it looks like a glorified swan but, hell, it sounds beautiful done right."She hadn't played the thing in over a month. she hadn't really even thought about it but now that she was a bit sad she'd dropped it altogether. "Maybe I'll blow off the dust one day and play you a few notes, eh? I can teach you too. What do you say?" The sound of a car crunching into gravel carried through the night air and Karla became attentive once more. It was small and black, nice looking, but had seen better days. She squinted against the headlights and, despite herself, tensed as she waited the figure to come into view. The car pulled itself around so its flank was to them, and... "You ignore me for months and months on end and then one day, call me up, saying you're in the park and you need a ride and then you-" Xara spat as she exited the car, slamming the door. She froze, "Oh my god." she whispered and turned to Karla, furious, "what did you do?" Karla scooted aside on the bench to let Xara have a better look of Sephira, and Xara's eyes flashed with a mix of fury and concern. "Thats Sephira. She's eighteen, lives alone. She found me in the subway," Xara cast her a venomously concerned look but said nothing and turned back to Sephira, "and took me home. We went out to get some milk, I went with her to get some air, and we were being followed. Then when we got back this man jumped through her kitchen window, on top of her, broke her last rib there," she pointed to the spot, " and sedated her. She killed him."Xara did not say anything for a long time, and Karla found it hard to see her friend after so long. She seemed so alien to her. Tears pricked at Karla's eyes. Her friends expression softened, "Okay, well, Sephira, my name is Xara, I'm an old friend of Karla's. We're going to get you help, okay?" she lifted the girl up and passed her into the backseat of the car, laying her down, and motioned for Karla to get into the passengers seat. Karla tugged on Xara's arm, who whirled around, daggers in her eyes. Karla winced, but mouthed, "Thank you." tears running down her cheeks. Relieved. Xara sighed and hugged her, gave her a kiss on the forehead. "It's good to see you again." she said merely, and hopped into the car. Karla buckled in as Xara pulled away onto the road, and turned back to Sephira, "Keep talking to us sweetheart," she said, her voice full of emotion, "Stay awake."[/blockquote] [/ul]

Sephira held on to every word as Karla explained what happened. Did all that really happen after they got back? As they set her in the back seat, it all came back to her in a flash. There wasn't much to remember, but she saw the knife in her hand, the blood spewing out, and then nothing but pitch black. She remembered the nightmares, waking up with a jolt and shifting infront of Karla. It was all as clear as a bell in her mind now.
She held her hands up above her face, looking at them dully, "I had to kill him...he was gonna kill her mom." She whispered to herself. Her body was lacking much needed oxygen from the way she had been breathing, she had started to lose it. She was pretty much incoherent at this point. She wasn't aware of where she was or who was there anymore. Reacting to this, her body subconsciously told her to take a deep breath to try and get that much needed oxygen. She jerked, feeling the bone puncture through. Blood began to pool in her lung, a few drops coming up with every cough she made. It had become even harder to breath, and she was no longer able to stay awake.
"Can't...*couch* Breath...! *cough*" She breathed, her hands grasping at her chest and throat. After that, she had become quiet and passed out. She was still breathing, but with only one lung it wasn't much.
(Sorry if it got a little too detailed there for you Tess. ^_^; Not trying to make you feel uncomfortable, just going with the roleplay.)
