The breeze rustled Jessabel's auburn hair. It was dark, but she could see everything clearly. The moon was shaped like a crescent, a sideways smile or frown, depending on your perspective. The tall trees blocked the moon from the lake, making the dark liquid look completely black and ready to eat someone. This did not scare the petite girl, though. She stood, bare feet touching the cold ground, looking up and the starless sky. The cold seeped into her skin like lotion. She hugged her torso with her arms. The only clothes on her body was a short sleeved t-shirt and a factory-produced jeans. The pocket knife couldn't be seen from inside her back pocket. A first glance, someone would think of her as a normal teenage girl, but that was far from true.
The silence in the air calmed her. The town was just too filled with noise, and she needed a place to think. A place to reflect on her memories. It didn't take her long to find the Lake she stood before at this very moment. It was a great change from the unsanitary, polluted city that she could see from her shoe-box apartment's window. It was something new. Taking in a deep breath, the girl changed into a tiger at the blink of an eye.
The White Tiger slowly approached the water. She knew no one would see her; it was midnight and completely deads-ville near the lake. Yet, Jessabel was cautious. If a human ended up seeing a tiger in the middle of the night, they would probably freak out and call animal control on her. She didn't want to have to go through all that again. Checking her surroundings, she decided it would be save. Her padded paws silently pranced over the grass and dirt until she was at the water's edge. With another glance around, Jessie assured herself that it was just her and the water. And then she jumped.
The ice water pierced her through her fur as she sank to the murky water's floor. She closed her eyes, allowing her striped body to float up to the surface. When her head came in contact with oxygen, she breathed in and opened her icy blue eyes. She dogie-paddled her way closer to the edge and shallow water. When Jessie's paws were able to reach the slimly ground she stopped and shrunk down so only her head was visible. She was on the look out for fishes to eat. How refreshing.

The forest around him was rather like a dream, Thao mused as he carefully made his way through the trees. They stood as tall, black silhouettes against the night sky, reaching up to the moon eerily. Even so, Thao was quite happy on his midnight walk, even humming a vague tune to accompany the snapping of twigs and crunching of twigs. It was surreal to him, like it was a place in a fantasy novel rather than his own town. The boy looked up at the smiling moon and smiled back, then slipped through a particularly tight pair of trees.
As he turned around, his eyes seemed to have stopped functioning. He blinked a few times, suddenly confused; where did everything go? After a few moments, his eyes adjusted enough to make out his environment - an extremely thick canopy of tree tops, which explained the unexpected darkness, and a very ominous looking lake. Thao grinned with excitement, walking closer to the edge of the rippling black water. I found a new spot! he thought gleefully.
Just then, something in the water caught his eye.
Thao jumped back, eyes wide with fear. searching for the rest of whatever it was. He wouldn't have been so frightened, except it moved - two things that the boy assumed were eyes seemed to catch even the little light that was available. He began moving back quite slowly, now holding his breath. The thing was a completely unknown entity, and he did NOT want it knowing he was there. Well, it probably already knows, part of him whispered, the rest of his thoughts scrambled by panic. I mean, I wasn't exactly quiet in coming over here. Nor was I quiet walking up to the water. In fact, I don't think I was even quiet at breathi-SNAP! Thao flinched at the sound, his heart racing. The twig he had stepped on betrayed him; the thing in the water most certainly knew now.

The White Tiger's closed eyes opened the second she heard the twig snap in half. Following the sound, the frozen blue eyes could see a faint outline of a human. Growling, she moved to where she was out of the water, but still on it's edge. Figuring that it couldn't she her since she couldn't see it, she shifted. It was probably a very reckless thing to do considering that the person there could very well be human and have no clue that there is such a think as shifter, but she didn't care.
Her skin and hair was wet from the murky lake water, but her clothes were not. They gradually became soaked as they absorbed the water on her skin. That was just one of the weird things about shifting that she would never understand, and didn't try to. A drop of water rolled off her hair and hit the shallow water's edge, echoing in the near silence.
Stretching out until she was her normal height of a couple inches over five feet, she slowly approached the other person. The closer she got, the more moonlight shined trough the trees and on the person's face. She stopped moving when she was a good meter away. "Hello."

Thao's breathing and pulse quickened as he searched the dark futilely, brown eyes not catching enough light to make out details. He could see enough, however, to make out that the unusually bright shape in the water was changing. Suddenly, it was taller, darker, and much more...human shaped. Thao blinked, suddenly very confused; what was going on?
The soft sound of a water drop hitting the surface of the lake echoed in the almost-silence, accompanied only by Thao's frantic but slowing breaths. He nervously tucked his pink-striped bangs to one side, hoping that whatever it was wasn't dangerous. He wanted to say that maybe, just maybe, it had been a shifter that he had caught unawares - but he couldn't be sure. He was entirely certain that the thing had been an animal when he first showed up, and he wasn't completely convinced it was human now.
"Hello."
Thao blinked again, rather stupidly. Alright, that confirmed that the thing was now human; female, no less, and she didn't sound like she could have been much older or younger than him. His anxiety began to dissipate, and he relaxed muscles that were tensed in case he had to bolt. "Um...hello?" he tried, hoping his voice wasn't as shaky as it sounded to him. He was still a little spooked. "Hi. Sorry to have interrupted your...ah...thing." He smiled sheepishly, though he doubted the girl would really see it. "Who are you?"

Jessabel stood, hands balled in fists and mind alert. She didn't know this human, so she couldn't trust herself to relax while the stranger was near. She couldn't trust, period. It was just how she is and always will be.
When the person spoke, she was positive it was male. She couldn't tell if he was a shifter or not, or if he was able to see her change from tiger to human. "Hi. Sorry to have interrupted your...ah...thing." The way he said this made the situation seem even more awkward then it was before he opened his mouth. She shifted her weight uncomfortably, but remained just as alert and cautious. She shrugged her shoulders in response, even though she wasn't sure if he saw it. She risked a glance over to the moon, where it had now fully disappeared behind the trees. The darkness was starting to make her paranoid. Digging into her pockets, she found the lighter next to the pocket knife. She had stolen the cheap lighter from a fellow Assassin, hoping she would stop smoking. The smoker just went and bought another lighter.
"Who are you?" he asked Jessabel as she rolled her finger over the metal wheel-thing, then pressed the plastic red button. It glowed in the dark, allowing her to see the person in front of her. Remembering the question he asked, she could have always said a fake name, or just not have answered at all. "Jessie," she told him finally, using as little words as possible. "And you are?"

As Thao waited nervously in the dark, the moon dipped behind the trees. Slowly but surely, the silvery light from the celestial body had inched away, until it was almost pitch black. The girl that the boy had seen wasn't responding, and it was making him extremely uneasy. Did I offend her? he wondered, thoughts turning fretful. Was this some sort of tradition-thingy, and I interrupted it? Or did I scare her by accident, and she's mad at me? There was a sneaking suspicion that this girl was also quite dangerous, but the young teen was trying to avoid those thoughts.
Suddenly, a yellow orange light flared up in the darkness, making the boy jump a bit. Thao blinked a few times, trying to adjust to the unexpected brightness - though it did let him see the stranger's face a lot better. She was really only a kid, probably no older than himself, and her expression was more serious than it should have been. She had a very wary look in her eyes, almost like she was watching some possible predator. "Jessie," she said at last, voice quiet and neutral. "And you are?"
"I'm Thao," he said, voice shaking just a little with nerves. Even though he now knew she wasn't some sort of psycho creature thing, he still was a tad anxious. Still, he didn't want to offend her, and managed to give her an amiable smile. "So. Um. You know you're standing in the middle of a lake, right? You should probably step out so you don't catch a cold or something." Well, that sounded friendly enough, he thought.
