The teenager sighed, running his fingers through his hair and closing his eyes against the dusky twilight. A cool breeze lifted across the rooftop, blowing his jacket's hood forward. Alex glowered and shoved it back, resting his elbows on his legs as his hazy gaze drifted out over the sea of buildings. His chin wobbled a bit and he buried his face in his hands, pointedly trying to get it to stop.
Can't let it get to you.
The teen sighed again and shook his head, wiping at his slightly-damp eyes with the backs of his hands. he had to be strong. For his mother, for his little sister...and most importantly, against the step-ass.
The boy felt his breathing grow steadier and he allowed himself a deep breath, relaxing his face and feeling the weight of the world grow smaller. Need to relax. You can't do anything if you're not thinking clearly.
"God dammit." He whined, staring back out over the dark city again, watching as the streetlight below him flickered. Tentatively, his mind wandered back to the events at his house that had driven him outside and up to the rooftop that he was now perched upon. He felt the familiar swarm of emotions threaten to swamp him and he immediately drew back, trying to keep his composure.
"Too early, I guess," he mumbled quietly to himself, shaking his head to clear the last of the thoughts. All he could remember right away was that he had come home to see his mother huddled in the corner of the kitchen, crying, and his step-father glaring at Alex from the foot of the staircase. He had been holding something, but it had flicked behind his back before the teenager had gotten a chance to see what it was.
The rest was a blur.
As it usually was.
Alex drew his legs up to his chest and rested his chin on his knees, closing his eyes and feeling the cool breeze ruffle his hair again. How long would it be this time, before he went back?
OOC|| "Alex wanted some alone time so he went to the roof of this random building and sat on the edge for no apparent reason."

Clouds covered the quickly darkening sky, shielding Danny's ebony feathers from the setting sun. Up above the heat trap of the city, it was actually pretty cold, making the shifter want to land. Giving a slight shiver, he tucked his wings in - thus turning into a sharp dive. The dive ended when Danny reached a streetlamp and swooped beneath the light. To anyone standing below, it would have appeared as though the bulb had suddenly flickered. The heat from the lower level warmed his feathers, giving him the drive to flap his way back up to the rooftops.
Claws clacking softly against the metal of the border, Danny raised his yellow raven eyes to stare at the figure before him. It was another male, probably no older than the shifter himself, holding himself in a very withdrawn manner. Hopping closer - and thus creating a quick tapping noise on the brick of the rooftop - Danny could see that this other boy had a peaceful, reflective expression on his face, though dampness shined in the corners of his eyes. Yellow eyes blinked in curiousity; who was this other kid? How did he get onto the roof? Would he be willing to play a game? A smirk almost formed on the inflexible beak of the raven. Let's find out, shall we?
As soon as Danny had thought that, a tingling sensation spread through out his body and feathers. The world and perspective then began to change as feathers, bones, muscle shifted and melted together, forming different structures like arms and legs in an instant. Within a split-second, the bird was completely gone, replaced with a boy in rumpled clothing, reminiscent of the disarray of the raven's feathers. Straightening out his shirt and jacket, the now-human figure grinned. Now they could talk.
"Hey there!" Danny said jovially, plunking himself down on the edge a few feet from the other boy. "I noticed you were up here all alone. Any particular reason why?" With another grin, the dark-haired boy pulled his knees up to his chest, mimicing the stranger. Unlike said stranger, however, Danny's position seemed far more laid back and at-ease.

Alex's face was overcast with the conflicting war that was going in within his mind. How long would he wait until he went back? Maybe he should go now? It was getting rather cold out. But, no. If he returned so soon, it might make him seem weak. He didn't want to seem weak. He should probably keep away. But he couldn't stay out all night, could he? Maybe his fox form would allow him to resist the city's chill a bit better than his human flesh would. But then the question became, how long would he be able to stay in Shifted form before he had to turn back? What if he got stuck? Or what if someone caught him-
"Hey there!" A cheerful voice called over the near-barren roof, and though it startled Alex, he didn't move. Instead his wary eyes glanced sideways to where the figure now perched, almost mirroring Alex's position. Who the heck was this kid? And how did he find me?
Lifting his chin from his knees slightly, he allowed himself to speak, finding relief in the fact that at least his voice wasn't wavering. "Not really. I like the view." Not the most intriguing of reasons, nor did it offer any more to the conversation, but Alex wasn't particularly in any mood to chat.

Danny smiled back at the cautious teen, nodding when the other explained his reason (rather, his nonreason) of his prescence on the roof. "The view, huh?" the dark-haired teen mused, rocking back and forth slightly. "Well, there's not much of a view right now." In a way, he was right; the already fallen night coupled with the dismal clouds created a rather drab scene. Even the city lights seemed a tad dull. Still, in a weird way, it's kinda pretty, Danny thought to himself, a smirk tugging on his lips.
"So! Mind telling me who you are and what your REAL reason for coming up here is?" the teen suddenly said, breaking the calm silence that had fallen between the two boys. The taller of the two boys had given up on rocking, and had instead swung his legs over the edge. His rubber sneakers made a quiet thump each time he bounced them against the brick of the wall. "I'm pretty sure you wouldn't come all the way up here for something as boring as this view." With another grin, he scooted towards the other boy and softly touched the dampness on the side of his eye. "Plus, the view CERTAINLY isn't something to start crying about." The raven-shifting teen was fully aware that he had just broken into the stranger's personal space, and was prepared to block or dodge if the other boy decided to smack him. That was what usually happened when he decided to initiate physical contact.

"That's true. But being above the city...it's nice to be away from life for a little while, you know?" The boy watched a wisp of cloud drift in front of the moon, momentarily plunging the city into near-darkness. He waited until it passed and the city was again cast in a silvery tinge.
"Well, you're quick to catch on," Alex allowed himself a half-hearted chuckle and leaned back, propping himself up with his arms. A faint smirk traced his lips. "I'm Alex. As for my reason, it's kind of personal. I just had to get away from home for a little while until things cool down." He briefly wondered to himself whether he meant himself or at home.
Oh god, not those kinds of thoughts again. He was about to excuse himself when the newcomer gently reached over and brushed at the tears that remained wavering at the corners of Alex's green eyes. The boy was completely baffled and cast the other a curious sidelong glance, half laughing at the gesture. "Oh, right. Well, I hate to argue with you, but the view is actually quite nice. So nice, in fact, that it brings tears of joy to my eyes just looking at it." He had to smile at the completely random gesture, even though ordinarily it probably would have caused Alex to smack the hand back. Maybe the emotional high made him feel grateful for the comfort.
Or maybe he was completely out of it.
"Like I said, just stuff at home."

Danny laughed brightly, the noise echoing just slightly on the empty rooftop. "Trust me, I know more about being above the city than you'll ever know," the boy said with a knowing smile. He didn't feel that he was giving away too much about his shifter identity; afterall, it was ambiguous information. The boy sitting next to him could take the hint any which way he pleased.
"Alex, huh?" said Danny with a smile. Withdrawing his hand from Alex's face, the taller boy pushed himself upright. He stood on the very edge of the building, toe tips just barely being supported by the slight rail. "You shouldn't lie like that. If your family troubles are making you cry, just say it." He then stepped away from the edge, planting his feet on firmer ground. Giving Alex a cheery smile, he walked closer to the other boy and leaned down to an equal eye level. "Lying about the scenery won't make the issues at home go away. But I know what can help." A mischevious glint suddenly appeared in the raven-haired teens eye, along with his now playful smile. "Would you care to dance with me?"

Alex decided to let the comment about being above the city go. He really wasn't in the mood to decipher any hidden meanings and sort out the possibilities. That was something to do when he felt more in control- not now, when he was still a mess.
He tilted his head upwards slightly to watch the other boy as he stood up, standing precariously close to the edge of the building. The fox shifter felt his stomach turn nauseous for a second, before the raven-haired boy stepped back to safer ground. What if he had fallen?
"Okay, fine. My family argues constantly and my step-dad is anything but great. I'll leave it at that, since you don't need to be bothered by details. But, hey, that's the jist of it."
...Aaand where did that come from? Alex raised a quizzical eyebrow, pivoting where he sat on the ledge to face the standing boy. "Dance with you? You're seeming a bit too mysterious at the moment. First of all, you appear out of nowhere, act horrendously kind to me, then ask me to dance. Can I at least have a name?" Nevertheless, Alex had stood up and brushed himself off.

Danny blinked in slight surprise when Alex began describing his family problems, then smacked the heel of his hand into his forehead when the other boy mentioned to lack of a name. "How rude of me," Danny said with a sheepish grin, "I completely forgot to introduce myself. I'm Danny, and it's very nice to meet you."
The teen stifled a laugh as he stood up straight, walking a little farther away from the other boy. "Alright, I'll give you that; I'm being a little mysterious. But I'm NOT being horrendously kind. All I want to do is cheer you up, and that's a pretty common occurance. You can't really say it's horrendously kind." Danny then started to stroll around the top of the building, taking slow, leisurely steps. "And the dancing thing...well, I can't cheer you up with checkers, since I didn't bring my box with me. Dancing just seems like the next best thing. So how about it?" He grinned at Alex, pausing in his little stroll to give a whimsical bow. "May I have this dance?"

Danny.
Never heard of him.
Alex nodded in acknowledgment and watched him curiously as this Danny character paced at a leisurely tempo along the rooftop. Not being horrendously kind? Well, he was the first to actually attempt to cheer the fox shifter up. No one had really done that before. Of course, it didn't help his case at all that every time Alex stormed out of the house he'd shout, 'And don't bother to come find me!', but that was beside the point. "A pretty common occurrence? Well, not in my experience, at least."
Alex slowly took a few steps to parallel those of Danny, who was on the other side of the rooftop. "And the dancing thing...well, I can't cheer you up with checkers, since I didn't bring my box with me. Dancing just seems like the next best thing. So how about it?" How about it? This really must be some weird crack dream. Alex tilted his head, contemplating the seemingly unreal boy that was bowing to him on a rooftop. The fox bet that he'd wake up any minute and laugh about it.
"Sure. Why not? It'd be something...different." Alex mocked his own formal bow, wondering what kind of music was playing through Danny's mind.
OOC|| Lol. Yay for OOC references!

"A pretty common occurrence? Well, not in my experience, at least." Danny did his best to hold back a incredulous smirk when Alex gave his dreary explination. "Tell me you're kidding," said the raven-haired teen, eyebrows raised in mild surprise. "You're saying that I, of all people, am one of a small number of cases where someone tried to cheer you up?" He chuckled a little bit, giving the other boy a somewhat playful smile. "Well, you have terrible luck then. A million people in this city, and you found the worst person here to try to make you happy."
Danny's smile became a smirk as Alex accepted his offer, sweeping into a joking bow as the raven-shifter had before. "Alright then!" In a few quick steps, the taller teen closed the distance between the two and reached out to grab Alex's hand gently. Next, he placed his hand - very softly - on the other boy's hip. To any observers (of which there were none) it would've appeared as though Danny had taken the leading position of a classic waltz. He smiled brightly at his dance partner. "If you don't want to waltz, that's fine of course. But is this alright?"
