Shaggy sneakers swayed in her hand as she strode through the sand barefoot. The sun was very welcoming, maybe even beckoning her to take a catnap and bath in the warmth. Considering the thought she dropped down, her knees bent and her rear met the sand. Silently she fought with herself, What am I doing here? Seaching? For what? There’s nothing here. Mechanically her hand met the sand, digging into it furiously.
Sighing, she removed her hand and shook it clean before reaching into her pocket and retrieving her wallet. Was it even hers? Weakly, she opened it, a faded tag reading Cynara. She counted her money, Twenty dollars and five cents. And she was already hungry, how long could she go on for? Would she have to start begging? “Maybe I could learn to fish and live off the land.” Cynara grinned as she spoke, was she always so moody?
What she found odd was how she remembered plenty about the world itself, how things worked, and silly little things. There were still gaps in even that, but she was stumped about how she had found her way into this city. She was glad that her anger had passed, and didn’t try to tempt the emotion again. What startled her most was the fact that she could turn into a panda. A freakin’ PANDA? She nearly had a heart attack when she found out, while the ability seemed well controlled, oddly enough, she had not been expecting it. But upon discovering the shocking power something inside her soothed her, crying out to explain, but caught in the dense cloud of her mind.
Standing up again she hid her wallet back in her pocket, she would definitely need the little money she had left. Her hands rose above her head and her back arched slightly, she stretched and yawned widely. The water was tempting, but it was something she couldn’t have yet. She only had one pair of clothes and she couldn’t risk getting them wet. Lowering her arms she turning from the water, sneakers still in hand, she began to walk back towards the city, from the path she came.

High in the sky Amber could see the black painted dots of seagulls searching the waters for food. For a moment, Amber sat there and peered up at their antics. The patterns of circles and ovals were hypnotizing. Sometimes she herself wished she could fly freely with the wind, to come and go as she pleased. Shaking the impossible thoughts out of her head, she turned and glanced back at her companion. The small, sturdy built cat contently peered back at her in acknowledgment. His jet black pelt blended perfectly in the shadows and to a human would go unnoticed, but to Amber's eyes there was a yellow-eyed black cat impatiently shifting right next to her. His whiskers twitched in annoyance and he wailed, "Well Amber?! Are you ready yet? Can we just go already?"
Being a close companion, Amber was used to his wailings and complaints. She playfully slapped her tail over his mouth to shut his moaning, and turned back to the task at hand. She peeked her head from the shadows. The sun instantly heated up her fur and she purred with eyes closed in delight. The sun's rays hit every inch of the harbor. Ink saw her contentment and hissed at her to go on. Reluctantly, she glanced around for anyone. Today was luckily empty, for the most part. There were no boats at the wharfs, no one was fishing at the pier, and there were no kids at the beach; well, except one. Amber shook her fur in annoyance, there wasn't supposed to be anyone today!
Looking closer she noticed that the girl wasn't doing anything anyway. She just sat there in the damp sand and was intently staring at something she was holding. Putting whatever she was holding away, she stretched and began to leave, carrying her sneakers with her. Amber mentally cheered, yes, now the whole harbor was free! Not even trying to hide her excitement, her eyes beamed down at Ink as she exclaimed, "The harbor is completely empty! Let's go now!" Letting out all his energy, Ink jumped to his paws and clumsily cantered down to the pier like a horse. Amber shook her head in amusement and soon followed after with her own giddy pace.

Scratching her brow Cyn stopped her pace, an invisible force nagged her. Had she forgotten something? She raised the fist that carried her sneakers, No... I still have those. Dopily she reached for her pocket, the familiar lump that was her wallet met her fingers. Check the money. Silently she ordered herself, and obeyed. She found the twenty dollar bill, but the nickel was gone. Was it in the sand? It must have been. As she turned her body to retrace her steps she let loose a sigh, was it really coming down to this? Tracking nickels? But deep down she knew it was simply for her amusement. She made her way down the path back towards the beach, she hadn’t walked for more than thirty seconds. Rearing a bend in the sandy path the water came into view again, gentle weaves giving it an almost life like appearance, like it was breathing. Silently she stood, breathing in the somewhat humid air until the shape of two cats pronounced themselves. What appeared to be the smaller one was rather jumpy; the two appeared to be heading to the pier.
Distantly, Cynara tied the shoelaces of her sneakers together tightly, her eyes remaining on the felines. Nickel first, cats later. A grin quickly spread across her face. She loved cats, had she ever had one herself? She hung the shoes around the inside of her shoulders, the lace connecting them at the back of her neck. Hastily she walked towards where she had been sitting, the seat easily spotted because of the disturbed sand. A first scan told her that there wasn’t a nickel, but with a hand she dusted the area speedily. “Ahah, Gotcha.” She spoke under her breath as her fingers pinched the sandy nickel. She looked back towards the cats, trying to spot them.
As she walked towards the pier she rubbed the coin in her hand, trying to clean it. It caught the sun, shining dully.

As Ink reached the sodden planks of the pier, he immediately stopped to the side to peer down. The water easily splashed against the beach in rolling waves. Farther out into the deep sea, schools of fish jumped out of the water and back in with a great splash. Loud caws filled the wharfs as groups of seagulls surrounded their prey. Ink scowled at his clear reflection in the water as memories of their last adventure flooded his mind. Attempting to frighten him, Amber crouched low, preparing to spring. Before acting on her mind, Ink spun around looking for his companion, just to find her crouched next to him. He opened his mouth to question her, but Amber quickly came back in full stand and cut him off, "So, do you want to go fishing today?" The black cat skeptically stared at her, but made no comment. Trying to get past his cold shoulder, she ignored Ink and skillfully stalked to the edge of the water.
Amber lifted her head, but kept her eyes down so her shadow wouldn't arise suspicion to the fish. The bright ball of gas floated right in the middle of the sky, at the hottest time of day. It was quiet hard considering nearly everywhere she angled her body, her shadow wouldn't follow, but eventually she settled on attacking from the side. For a brief moment, she closed her eyes and took a deep, calming breath recalling what she had to do. She opened her eyes and readied herself to catch a fish. Amber swiped her tail across the boards and lowered a paw about half way until it freely rocked with the ocean breeze. Her keen eyes locked onto her ignorant prey. Ink uncomfortably shifted on his paws, he didn't want to get wet or fall into the water again.
Suddenly, an outside force slammed into her backside. Unexpecting the attack, she fell into the water automatically causing the minnows to frantically dart off in random directions. Falling face first into the water, she flailed in panic for a moment before she paddled her way to the surface. Breaking the top with a gasp, she glared up at whoever dared to push her. At her surprise, no one was there but Ink who sat there twitching his whiskers in amusement. "That's payback!" He yelled at her, excited at the thought that he actually caught her off guard. Unlike most cats, Amber simply floated in the water, unaware of the water that soaked every inch of her fur. Her whiskers drooped with the extra weight as little droplets plopped back to where they belonged.
((Ugh, sorry. It kind of sucks, I'm not in the mood today. :\))

She watched the cats, smirking from not too far away. Her toes wrinkled in the sand and she laid her shoes beside her, she didn’t feel like caring them anymore, and she could always just pick them back up before she left. As the dark cat peered over the edge of the pier she wondered what the two were doing, Watching the fish? A vision of the small cat falling in slipped through her mind, her smile growing.
The other cat, larger than the first, joined in watching the water. They were definitely odd cats. As one of them plummeted into the water, Cynara opened her mouth to laugh, but instead her mouth formed an ‘o’ and her eyebrows grew crooked. Did that cat just talk? Yes, the little cat had just pushed the other one into the water and then yelled ”That’s payback!”. A firm had shot to her forehead and grasped her hair, her brain buzzed. Her thoughts immediately strayed to herself, her other form to be exact.
She could speak while a panda and cats normally couldn’t do much more than meow. They had to be like her. Maybe it was just the wind. She tried to explain the words from the feline, but the excuse was poor and she quickly abandoned it. Maybe I’ll go say hello. If it’s only a cat it won’t matter, and I can just walk away. She glanced around, she hadn’t noticed before that the harbour was empty, was it normally this deserted? Sliding her nickel into her pocket she began to glide silently towards the pier.
Shifting before her human foot met the first plank, she advanced over her midnight paws. The dock swayed under her weight slightly, but it gave little notion of breaking. “That’s not very nice, y’know.” Her eyes met the dark cat, wondering what his next move would be. “And not very smart, I might add. Your friend is bigger than you.” Mentally she grinned; this was the first fun she had had in days. She continued to advance on the cat, the pier creaking with every step.

Thoroughly distracted, Ink hopped back as Amber set her paws on the pier to lift herself out. A quiet creak vibrated the dock. Ink swiveled his ear backward for any more sounds, but none were made. Suddenly, a voice scolded him, "That’s not very nice, y’know.” Amber instantly dropped back into the water, surprised by the new voice. As Ink spun around in fright, his deep golden orbs met the eyes of a large canine version of Amber. Its body was at least 3 times the size of Amber with long, fluffy white fur. It's strange black markings were symmetric on her body as its seemingly saucer-sized, black eyes stared back at him. The shifting of her massive black paws caused the dock to slightly sway under the weight.
Once the creature was a little closer it continued, “And not very smart, I might add. Your friend is bigger than you.” For a brief moment, Ink stared wide eyed in unimaginable terror at the monster advancing on him in silence and when it finally got close enough, his fur sprung up and he flinched. His puffed up tail excitedly lashed behind him. As the fat 'canine' animal halted in her tracks, Ink abruptly yowled. Coming back to his senses, he scrambled to his paws and bounded further down the pier. Unfortunately, he escaped the wrong way, and spun around to turn back, but stopped as he realized he basically trapped himself. Unsure of what to do, he simple stood there with eyes as big as the moon, tail fluffed and straight up, and furiously trembling as he intently gazed at the giant creature.
Amber rolled her eyes in exasperation at her friend's random act. Yet again, she heaved herself out of the water with some effort. Once she was completely out, she vigorously shook the wetness off her silky fur until her dampened fur lifelessly clung to her skinny body. She cast a sideways glance at Ink before twisting around to face whatever scared him. Amber froze in mid turn. Her eyes widened in surprise as they took in what she saw. A fluffy Great Panda stood staring right at her. Her mind screamed, what the hell?! Panda's don't live anywhere near Shelpey Alley! Unless... unless it's a shifter. It could've gotten away from the zoo... but it was highly unlikely. What was the panda doing here anyway? What if it was here to hurt me or Ink? Although her fur stood on end, she uncertainly murmured, "Ummm, hi there?" And although she was scarcely greeting it, she felt half as terrified as Ink. He was now trapped, and she wasn't big enough to fight a panda; even in her original form. Unsure of what to do, she waited with hidden fear for the panda to make its move.
