Sneakers smacking the wet pavement, Elsi continued down the sidewalk. The moon hung low in the sky, stars shining between the indigo clouds. She had waited for the rain to stop before leaving, but with the wetness came cold, which clung to her clothes. Hugging herself to keep warm she stopped walking and leaned against the brick wall, her mouth pulled into a weak frown.
She waited outside the small cafe, the life from inside shedding light onto the motionless street. She hung just out of reach of the lights, covered in the blanket of darkness. Unravelling a hand from her sweater, she strummed the wall behind her with her fingers. To say the least she was bored, there hadn’t been much to do for the past day.
Waking up tonight, she knew what she was going to do. Find something exciting. Her frown pulled into a grin, a flash of teeth showing. Specifically, she was going to find another shifter. She had never met another, well that she knew of, of course. Rumours littered the alleys of the town, and without a delicate ear would have been mistaken for idiotic babble. But Elsi knew better, after all, she was a shifter herself.
Standing motionlessly, Elsi slanted towards the outside wall of the cafe, her small figure easily missed in the darkness.

Amber lightly shook her head at her friend's stupid antics, "Yes! I'll be fine Kay." Kay blinked at her friend, "Okay fine! Be that way! I'm going to go sleep... and then stalk Jay in the morning..." Amber huffed a laugh at her friend and rolled her eyes. She lightly pushed Kay as she stumbled away, "Okay, see ya later then." Kay hopped off on her way while Amber sheepishly shook her head at her disappearing figure.
Amber glanced around her, the darkness finally seeping in like a dark hand clutching around her. She was admittedly slightly nervous, but Amber had been in darkness before. Amber's golden eyes glowered in the dark from the moon's casting illumination. Little stars twinkled in the sky like eyes blinking down at her, watching her every movement. Amber turned her head around the town square. It was mostly empty, but there were still some people around, some stores were still open even.
The streetlights shadowed light shone down on the streets, only a few figures being seen walking by. Amber's eyes scored the area, looking for something to do, or something to see, just anything really. Maybe she should go home actually... Amber scowled and sighed and crossed her arms over her chest, clutching onto her shoulders in a small stretch. Her body tensed a moment before she relaxed back onto her toes and made her way toward a random alley.
She wasn't really afraid of what was there, or could be there. If anything, Amber would just shift and run off, that was her original plan after all. Amber shifted as she made her way to the alley, unconsciously looking around to make sure no one saw her. Whether she was acting suspicious or not, she wanted to at least make sure no one would see her in the middle of shifting. That would be troublesome...

Sighing loosely, Elsi leaned closer into the cold wall, taking in the stars above. She looked to catch any constellations she knew, but couldn’t name anything more than the big dipper and little dipper. She laughed silently, that would be something worth learning, especially considering the amount of time she spent outdoors at night. Writing a mental note to study more about constellations, Elsi scanned the streets once again.
Among the few people still loitering around the town square the figure of a girl caught her attention. She looked roughly the same size as Elsi. The girl’s eyes scanned her surroundings, and momentarily drifted over Elsi. She had to reassure herself that the girl couldn’t have seen her. Elsi was far enough away from the street lights. Her eyes remained on the figure, lazily studying her, wondering what she could be up to.
Drifting off into thought, she barely realised that the form had begun moving again. Her eyes struggled to keep up, burning from a bad night’s sleep. The girl was moving towards the alley across from Elsi. Quickly examining the area, she realised that most of the lingering people had dispersed, leaving little movement apart from the other girl. She turned her head back, trying to spot the figure again.
Her heart nearly stopped as she saw that the girl had vanished. What?! Where did she go? Elsi hadn’t heard any loud footsteps, she couldn’t have ran anywhere. Suddenly her eyes focused onto the much smaller shadow heading for the same alley, her brain stuttered. It was dark, too dark to know for sure... But the hunch that had knotted its way into Elsi’s stomach screamed: Shifter.
Absently her hand touched her pocket, feeling the outline of the can of pepper spray. While wandering the streets at night it had proven to be useful, and whether this was one of those cases was not yet determined. She found it unlikely that she would need to resort to such a thing. After all, it was only another girl, much like Elsi herself. Detaching herself from the wall, she broke off into a steady pace, trying to remain as quiet as possible, while not letting the shifter escape from view.
She considered calling out to the shifter, but wasn’t sure whether she would try and run away from Elsi or not. Closing onto the figure, the window for remaining quiet enough to avoid detection was narrowing quickly. Whatever the creature was, it looked small. Aware that the shifter was no doubt conscious of her presence, Elsi stood a couple metres form the alleyway entrance, watching intently.

As soon as Amber disappeared from view she filtered through the maze of alleyways until she disappeared behind the corner. Amber stared forward into the darkness, there were no lights at all, only the bright moon shining down with a thin silver fairy ring. She took a breath and fluidly shifted with years of practice and sharp precision. Amber blinked, everything seemed so much bigger, but then again she was used to it.
The buildings towered over her, blocking her in like a box. Her keen eyes pierced the area, her eyes flashing under the little light that was there. Amber flicked her ear and trotted forward, heading back toward the entrance. She hadn't been carrying anything so all was good. Amber smoothly loped over the dusty concrete as she made her way back to the center of the square. She could hear the rushing splashes of the fountain and the light tunes of the music from the cafe. Who knew it stayed open this late?
Amber shrugged it off as her eyes peered around the corner, looking around the area. There were a few shops beginning to close as the employees and managers hopped in their cars and drove off. Amber tilted her head as she looked around curiously, an odd habit that she picked up after her first shifting. Hey, at least it made the form of a cat all the more convincing.
Amber spotted no one in particular that might have caught on. For a moment she spotted a figure in the darkness, but her eyes, unbeknown, slipped right past. Her mind quickly figured that if someone was out this late in an alleyway it was either a shifter or a person on drugs... or something. Either way, she didn't think about it long. As she finished searching the clearing, Amber turned and headed down the sidewalk, making sure to stick to the darker shadows as an ordinary cat would.
Her pace was skittered and jerky, her eyes peering around ever so often as if someone would snatch her right of the streets. It almost happened before. Amber eventually found herself right before the window of the cafe, her body so close to the ground no one would even think about looking down. Amber pushed her upper body up and set her paws on the window, peering in. Maybe she would see someone she knew?
