It was well past midnight and pitch black; the only light came from the dim street lamps and the moon and stars above. Every house was virtually silent, and it seemed as though nothing could shatter this perfect night. A couple sat on their doorstep, smoking and gossiping about friends... A dog barked in the distance. Siren lights off, a police car came cruising up the street, the officer inside merely making his nightly rounds.
Sid was pleasantly drunk tonight, not so much that he couldn't think straight... just enough that it calmed his nerves and gave him a content feeling. He was unaware that the police were still looking for him; the burning of that building had been over a year ago, and in an entirely different city from this one. Being caught was one of his worst fears for a while after that, but he'd grown relaxed... maybe too much so. Nonetheless, he was in plain view of the cruising cop, were he to turn onto Sid's street.
He began to cross the street to get to his house, hardly looking up at the police car that was stopped to let him pass. Unfortunately for Sid, this was the worst mistake he could have made. Seeing the young man's face jolted something in the cop's memory.
"Wasn't he... wanted for arson?" the man muttered to himself, searching mentally for a name and coming up with nothing. He radioed his partner, who was currently elsewhere in the city, and, after describing the man, got the confirmation that this was the guy. He pulled up in front of Sid's house and got out of the car, strolling casually up the front walk to where Sid now sat on the doorstep. The young man looked up as he approached, a quizzical look on his face.
"Sid Janowski?" he questioned - it didn't make much sense to arrest someone without making sure they were the right guy first, right? This, however, worked in Sid's favor - upon hearing his name, and knowing there was nothing he could have done wrong to earn him just a ticket, he got up... and ran.
"Damn!" the cop muttered, watching the blonde man disappear. Being in his fifties and out of shape, he knew he'd have no chance chasing the perpetrator on foot... and he couldn't very well drive through people's yards. Pulling out his radio, he called for backup, explaining the situation. Looking up to see where Sid had gone, he was surprised to see that it seemed as though the man had simply... disappeared.
Meanwhile, a small white ferret dashed through the grass, trying to get as far away as he possibly could before he had to stop for breath. Ferrets were fast, but their bodies simply were not made for long-distance running, a disadvantage when that was exactly what Sid needed. However, he knew that as a ferret, his chance of being arrested was zero, while as a human, it shot up further than he felt comfortable with. He was scared out of his wits right now, despite how calm he looked... if ferrets could really look calm. He found a clump of bushes and hid under it, his little ferret chest struggling to get some air again. Figuring he was safe for now, he crouched there, waiting for a good time to start moving again... he didn't really know anyone who would keep him safe, so he figured as soon as he turned back he'd be completely screwed over.
