When Scruffy said, "You got it, kid," Nikkie had to just stop and stare at him like he had grown another head for a moment. Kid? Nikkie, a kid? She definately wasn't a kid, if she was anything. She walked as she talked so as not to be left behind. "Uh, kid? Scruffy, I'm 23. I'm not really a kid." She said, one of her dark brows raised in a slightly amused expression.
"Any idea where we're going?" Asked Scruffy after a short while. Nikkie blinked, looking thoughtfully at the area around her. She knew exactly where she was (mostly thanks to being a cop) but she didn't really care where they went. "Not really. I spent most of my time sleeping when I got home." She chuckled lightly, warm gray eyes looking around at the couples and other people that walked as well. It was such a beautiful day that Nikkie couldn't help but smile and relax, completely understanding why they were all out. She was honestly a little surprised that Lyx had decided to stay home on such a pretty day but she knew that if he really wanted to go outside, he could open the deck doors and go lay out in the sun.
"I'm happy to go pretty much anywhere today, really. It's so pretty out right now; I don't normally get to enjoy this weather. I'm usually working right now, ya know?" She said lightly after taking in the relaxing sounds around her. A gentle breeze blew by then, causing some of her dark ebony hair to blow over her shoulder and she calmly brushed it back behind her. It fell back into the hanging mass that was her ponytail and she ignored her considerably lighter bangs completely. They never liked to behave, especially not when there was wind around.

Auburn eyebrows disappeared into Scruffy's bangs as the woman beside him gave him an incredulous look, something like disbelief evident in her eyes. "Uh, kid? Scruffy, I'm 23. I'm not really a kid," said Nikkie, her tone and expression now bemused. The taller of the two took a moment to stare in surprise before he, too, cracked a grin. He honestly wasn't expecting that; after the morning meeting, he had pegged her at twenty. "Sorry, Nikkie," he chuckled, feeling just a little embarrassed by his mistake. "But if it makes you feel better, I call everyone younger than me 'kid.' You're not too far behind, but you still qualify." He offered a slightly sheepish smile, and soon pushed the matter out of his mind as they made their way down the sidewalk.
"Working, huh? Looks like your morning shift didn't turn out too badly, then," the ex-bartender mused in response to Nikkie's statement. "I mean, you had to get up REALLY friggin' early, but at least now you get to spend the day outside." To Scruffy, the trade was worth it - especially since he experienced the exact same thing. Not only did his crack-of-dawn shift grant him free time for the rest of the day, he also had the luck to meet his new friend.
Not long after his last statement, an idea hit Scruffy. They still needed to decide on something to do for the day, and with they way they were headed, they were bound to hit the ocean... "Hey, ki-er, Nikkie?" he began, voice already carrying a hint of his excitement at the idea. "How does the harbor sound? We need something to do today, and we're going in that direction anyway." His usual friendly smirk was replaced with a full-blown grin, helping to add to his hopeful, almost persuasive expression. He looked vaguely like a kid trying to convince his parents to go out somewhere fun, like the park.

Full pale lips twitched up into an amused grin as Nikkie watched Scruffy stop and stare at her for a second, before a grin took over his face too. "Sorry, Nikkie," he chuckled apologetically. "But if it makes you feel better, I call everyone younger than me 'kid.' You're not too far behind, but you still qualify." He offered a slightly sheepish smile, which Nikkie nodded to with her own grin, before falling silent. "How far is not too far?" She asked with a slight grin, now curious. How muchyounger than him was she, anyways? He didn't look too much older than her. She'd say 28 at the most.
"Working, huh? Looks like your morning shift didn't turn out too badly, then," he said after a few moments. "I mean, you had to get up REALLY friggin' early, but at least now you get to spend the day outside." He added, and Nikkie had to chuckle? Morning shift? That lasted until about 3 in the afternoon. No, she'd been on the night shift, which went from 9 pm until 5 am. "Heh, I wasn't working the morning shift. That's my normal shift, an easy 6 am to 3 pm, not including paperwork. I was working the night shift; 9 pm til 5 am." She snickered lightly, her stone gray eyes bemused.
They fell into a relaxed silence once more, this time both of them just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather. Soon, Nikkie would be going on vacation. She wouldn't be going out of town, but she wouldn't be going to work, either. She planned on using her two weeks to just relax and go to the beach. Maybe she'd invite Scruffy along....? She shrugged mentally. If he wanted to come along, he was more than welcome. He could even bring a friend if he wanted to. Nikkie would be bringing Lyx, after all. He may not like swimming as much as she did, but he did love to lay on the beach and play in the sand. Nikkie, she was as good as a fish. She blamed it on having grown up going swimming all the time.
"Hey ki-er, Nikkie?" Came Scruffy's voice suddenly, making Nikkie blink and turn her gaze to him. He sounded excited about something. "How does the harbor sound? We need something to do today, and we're going in that direction anyway." He suggeted eagerly. Nikkie stared at him for a second before laughing and nodding. "Sure, sounds fine to me." She laughed. Scruffy looked like a little kid, just so adorable that even Nikkie had to laugh and agree with what he was asking.

Score! thought Scruffy as Nikkie gave her approval, lips still set into a relaxed smile. He hadn't really answered her question about his age - after all, he was trying his best to ignore it - but she seemed to have been alright with it. Doesn't matter now, the auburn haired adult mused with satisfaction. We're going to the harbor!
The farther the pair walked, the more the scenery changed. The sidewalk they had been traveling on was clean before, with mostly leaves and perhaps a stray wrapper littering the concrete - now, with every step, they crunched or scuffed at tiny grains of sand. The seagulls circling above cried louder and louder, and some even swooped down to nibble or catch at stray food. One or two of them were shifters for certain - sadly, Scruffy was blissfully unaware.
"Weird seagulls, huh?" asked the taller of the two jokingly as one particularly brazen bird landed right in front of them. Its eyes held a spark of awareness that all the others lacked, and it made eye contact with Nikkie specifically. "I think it likes you," Scruffy commented, laughing a bit.

Nikkie naturally began to get a bit more excited the closer they got to the ocean, feet happily crunching the sand underfoot and relishing in the shifting feeling of it. Unlike a lot of people, Nikkie loved the sand. She loved to run on it barefoot and she loved to just all around play in it.
The seagulls overhead didn't bother Nikkie at all but she was able to notice a couple of Shifters within the group. When one boldly dropped down in front of them and locked eyes with Nikkie, the Rottweiler Shifter returned the gaze calmly, a small smile on her face. "Weird seagulls, huh?" Joked Scruffy, Nikkie glancing over at him and nodding. "Yeah, they're pretty weird." She chuckled, holding a hand out to the bird Shifter. "I think it likes you." He laughed, the bird Shifter tilting its head to the side as if to say, "Really? Is that all I'm good for?" before shrugging to the best of its ability. Nikkie laughed. "You think so?" She asked, grin on her face. "I think I'd have to agree with you."
Hopping into the air, the seagull landed on Nikkie's hand and gently poked her arm twice with its beak -the code for no news yet- before taking off with a shrill cry. Nikkie shook her head, grinning, and looked over at Scruffy. "I helped that bird a while ago. It was being attacked by a couple of dogs and I got it taken care of. It'll come up to me whenever it sees me now." She said by way of explanation, not willing to reveal the truth about the seagull Shifter just yet. She'd tell Scruffy the whole truth about it when she knew his alliance as a Shifter.

As the bird flew away and Nikkie explained its strange behavior, Scruffy smiled. It was...nice, actually, to see someone giving a damn about the so-called flying rats, and he had always liked seeing people interact well with animals. "Man, that's rough," he said in a friendly tone, picking the pace up again. He could hear the ocean crashing from here -- or maybe it was the roar of the city, acting as a large-scale conch shell. It was hard to tell sometimes. "But that seagull is damn lucky. Most people wouldn't have saved it. Looks like you're pretty unique, ki-Nikkie."
Despite the fact they were now on their way to the ocean -- one of the most calming, entertaining things about the city -- something bugged Scruffy that he just couldn't shake. Something seemed off about the encounter with the gull, as though Nikkie was hiding something from him, or lying to him. Even though that's ridiculous, he told himself, because birds can get attached just as well as humans. There's nothing weird about this.
Pushing the matter to the back of his mind, he turned to Nikkie to give her a friendly smile. "Where do you want to go first?" asked the auburn man as he pushed his ponytail back over his shoulder. He honestly didn't care where they went, as long as it was in the area, and the courteous thing to do would be to let Nikkie decide.

“Man, that’s rough.” Said Scruffy, a smile on his face and his tone friendly. Nikkie nodded, watching the Shifter leave with a squawk. He rejoined his flock for a moment, going up to the other Shifters and speaking to them as well, before splitting off from the group and disappearing from sight. Nikkie gave her attention back to Scruffy happily. He was talking again, more about the bird. “But that seagull is damn lucky. Most people wouldn’t have saved it. Looks like you’re pretty unique, ki-Nikkie.” Nikkie had the grace to blush ever so slightly before shaking her head and chuckling. “No, I’m not that unique. I just can’t stand by and watch an animal be mauled is all. Same goes for people most of the time, too.” She grinned, thinking about how it was expected of her to give a damn about people getting mauled. She was a cop, after all.
Continuing along the beach, Nikkie couldn’t help but feel at ease with the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. The beach had always been one of her favorite places in all of Shelpey, aside from the Station of course. She had come here regularly all her life and with such attendance came the knowledge of cool spots. Which came in handy as Scruffy said, “Where do you want to go first?”
She glanced at him for a moment, watching him push his ponytail over his shoulder, before her eyes roved the beach, automatically pulled towards one of her favorite spots. It was a secluded little area of the beach, blocked off by tall rocks that came up onto the beach and went out into the ocean about fifteen yards. Between the wall of rocks on each side was about twenty feet of open, clean sand. Most people didn’t go to it, for what reason Nikkie was unsure, so she could normally count on it to be empty of everything except for the odd sea critter.
Smiling over at Scruffy, she pointed over to the spot. “It may not be big or popular, but it’s a nice little spot of beach. I go there all the time during the summer. It’s a nice little piece of beach.” She suggested, hoping it was clear and free of trash.
