pink pads raced across the damp black pavement. nose sniffing a thousand times per minute, picking up minute sources of food in this dingy atmosphere. after being abandon for so long, and rarely visited, there was not much edible carbon left. though surprisingly there was a small piece of hamburger near a staircase, and a french fry by a second story cell. being such a small, fragile, innocent, and petite body this was a feast, and cereal was left with a plump belly. the reason for his scavenge here instead of the plentiful fairground, or even a sidewalk, was because he didn't have to keep a constant watch on the skys for aerial predators. it put his little heart at rest, and allowed him to enjoy his time scavenging instead of have it filled with a horrible expectancy to encounter death at any moment.
chex was a small white feeder mouse, skin a lovely shade of pink, and fur snow white. he kept it bright and fluffy, and his pads nice and clean. being a rodent was no excuse not to keep up his hygienic routines. eyes were a reflective shade of red, and he was without a doubt an albino mouse. whole and fit, and he looked good enough to be someone's pets versus the dark and dingy rats of the sewers. shy and fragile, always the prey his entire life, even as a human. though his life wasn't a complete sob story, he took joys in the little things. and right now, having a plump belly and nice clean fur, was a joy of the little things. perched on his hind legs, raised front paws to lick his arms and then swipe it over his head and ears. very cat-like but it was refreshing. almost like a splash in the face with cold tap water.
though, being an assassin queer boy, what was he doing in thief territory? he was recruiting. not exactly intent on finding her, but he knew that she was a snake, and snakes prey on mice. so how else better to find the predator but to act the prey. so even though this small little mouse appeared oblivious to anything, he was very intent on not getting eating as he played this game of cat and mouse; or rather snake and mouse. nervous as he was, knew that he could shift into human on any sudden impulse and escape getting eaten. but maybe not bitten. 'why am i doing this again?'

just as paws swiped once more over his small skull, the small rodent was considering going back to the outside world and living once more as a human. but ears pricked, and his muscles stiffened. being an animal preyed upon quite often, evolution has it's perks. instinct told him to run and hide though his senses couldn't immediately pick anything up. but being part human, he was curious and wanted to know what triggered this flee behavior. falling back onto all fours, sniffed the ground for a moment letting his body slither across the damp surface. turning around, fond himself staring at a leathery black snake. squeaking in fear and surprise, automatically shifted back into his human form. it was rather sloppy and had the railing not been there chex would of fallen off the second story onto the ground floor.
back against the rusted railing, stared at the snake still with fear in his eyes even though he had probably startled the snake almost as much as it had startled him. chex could pass for a 16 year old when in reality he had just turned 21. he had white hair that occasionally fell over his eyes, and striking red albino eyes. he was wearing worn light blue jeans that were torn at the bottom and faded at the knee. a black wife beater, with a burn-out button up shirt over it. though the buttons were undone, collar was screwed up, and sleeves slightly ripped. breathing hard, in this state of panic he looked utterly adorable.
on his left hand was his black shifter tattoo about the size of a quarter. if his shift wasn't obvious enough, that was confirmation. "who... who are you?" of course he was talking to a snake, and it couldn't talk back. feeling foolish, got to his feet and took a step back. adrenaline and shock starting to wear off, atleast until he saw the reptile was a dozen feet long.

albino eyes watched at the large snake suddenly morphed into a woman girl. she had long silver hair, with soft blue eyes, leopard top, and flare leather pants. she looked nice, except for the leopard top which reminded him of cats which sent shivers down his back. stunning and shocked, took a hesitant step backwards. she wasn't advancing on him, so there was no need to flee. but as senses rushed back into his mind, chex realized that this was the girl he was to recruit. a former thief that had currently gone neutral. swallowing his fear, took a deep breath and said lightly. "right... no ears... well; i'm chex, assassin, mouse. and you are?"
as/if she introduced herself, chex went on anyways without really processing it. "i've heard from sources that you've gone neutral. is that correct?" these words were confident and flowed in complete non-stutter filled sentences. read in monologue as if off paper, except for the question which had an uplift in tone at the end. shaking back his head as to brush the hair out of his eyes. as shock wore off, he started to become shy rather than reserved. fiddling with his fingers in front of him, with nothing else to do.
his persuasion skills weren't the best, which was why he was confused when he received word that he was to gain the trust of this girl. how it was worded, made it sound like he was to gain her trust only to betray her later. so chex had somehow manipulated it in his mind that they were recruiting her and she was a friend. chex couldn't betray those he trusted, those trusted individuals were few, but he couldn't. he'd rather die, and death was something that he tried to avoid but wasn't afraid of. he was afraid of the unbearable pain that came before death. but not the actually fact that he would never wake up again. "Um... sorry about the... interrupting your hunt. i mean... i don't want to get eaten." ending this with a unsure smile, hoped that she would return to smile and settle the atmosphere.

Airyll... it had a nice ring to it. so cereal box and air-bender; lovely. shuffling his feet, stared down at his heavily worn faded black converse shoes. her voice ringing in the abandon jail yard as she explained that she was indeed neutral, but was never really aligned with the thieves. nodding in acknowledgement, raised head and eyes to stare at her silvery hair pulled back in a ponytail, bangs fluttering around her eyes. 'Does nobody just talk to people any more? Running around recruiting without even getting to know somebody, hmph.'
she seemed so moody. 'no... not moody just opinionated.' nodding once more to acknowledge her mini-speech said in his shy voice with the slightly gay accent, "I talk more than few, and less than others. if anything, it's a reason to force fix a conversation. make friends, alliances, bonds. there's only one way to live in this world." what was that way? for chex it was to be a parasite and leech onto someone who could provide and protect. at that moment, his caregiver was his boyfriend, kyrian, who was also a shifter. whom he was heavily infatuated with.
'...I'm rambling aren't I.' giving a small smile, shook his head no allowing his white locks to fling about his face. "not at all, it's good to know that it wasn't a malicious hunt. but... excuse me if i'm wrong... but you seem a tad... oh i donno, innocent. are you knew to shelpey or have you just escaped it's morbid facts?" the ice was broken, but as chex said this he almost recoiled. it was a rather personal question, almost as blunt as asking 'what is your past' which was just rude. eyes diverting back to the ground, hoped that she wouldn't take offense and took his body language as obvious submissive apology.

how she spoke, how she moved, she was a very independent one. who believed what she believed, and took pride in her opinions and her way of life. without limits, to do anything that came to mind on the slightest impulse. she was free. not this false freedom that 'America' gives, but hardcore free. no one told her what to do, she was her own boss, she controlled her life, and she would be the one to decide when it ended.
envious, jealous, and longing for that same perspective on life. though chex wasn't unhappy with how he lived and loved, it was just that he felt so lowly being a parasite. but wishing, hoping, and dreaming didn't turn into reality and chex had always known that ever since he was a young child. eyes directed at the floor right in front of his shoes, gave an embarrassed shadow of a smile. "yeah... very simple." voice trailing off, left a silence between the two of them. not really keen on breaking it, since there wasn't an awkward air.
the air was dry, and yet the pavement moist. rust scent filled the air as it caressed metal bars, poles, railings, and other metallic surfaces. everything was dingy, dark, and depressing. crud and muck lining the walls where there were rat highways. their grease slick bodies giving the dirt something to cling too. to many people it was a low-life place where prisoners deserved to be kept. even in it's prime, this jail couldn't of been any better among the murder, rape, and illegal trade. but the sad part was, as this man-made structure stood sturdy and tall, it was a roof overhead. chex, who had always lived in poverty and going meal to meal, was glad to have a roof overhead where he was away from wandering eyes and obvious harassers. there was only one way to live for him, so he envied airyll who stood proud in front of him. not that his life was a sob story, no. he was perfectly happy and content to live the way he was living. there were perks, adventures, survival, it was all a challenge and you learned to appreciate the little things in life. so he was never depressed.
she started talking about the guilds, and how she was a reporter and wanted to learn more about them. she was poking her nose into some dangerous territory there. learning about the guilds so she could display a journal entry in a newspaper or magazine where the humans would read about them. how in depth would she go? or would she write as if they were just any regular gang. "Dangerous to a limit, that would be." but as she spoke of other shifters, maybe a few, it kinda confirmed her limited knowledge. "yes... both guilds are filled with shifters. most of us, them, shun humans and consider them the enemy as well as each other.
"assassins are more brutal. as i try and speak from a non-bias point of view. it's not because we're the bad guys, it's because our leader is more brutal and because of that we have attracted the shadier shifters. thiefs are... they're comprised of smaller shifters and are nicer and what not. they have been against each other for a long time, and also against the police, and humans. some have more lethal opinions than others, but yeah.
"I'm in assassins because, well not because i'm evil or not-nice or something like that. but we're a family once you learn who to trust, who to avoid, and how you care for one another. i approached them first, and they accepted me, and i take pride in being an assassin." finishing, gave a small smile as his glossy red eyes looked at the snake shifter. "they don't care what you are, or what you aren't."

it was curious. what is curious you might ask? oh airyll. oh yeah... you probably want something a bit more descriptive. well, it's curious to see how passionately she talks about her journalism. with or without the fact that one day it might get her into trouble since she's chosen to pick such a dangerous subject. the guilds, perhaps she would write about them as any ole' human gangs. or perhaps she might even divulge the shifters to get readers, ratings, watchers. she might as well die her own noose there. but if she was smart, and chex suspected she was despite her lack-of-knowledge, she wouldn't reveal the shifters and she wouldn't be brutally murdered by the sadistic bunch of assassins who loved to kill for the fun of it. hence their name, it's what some of them did best. unlike chex who was more of one to gain and get information being the rat he was.
"to... put food on the table?" partially confused, thought that airyll would be a decent individual with a steady income and a cushion filled life. that or maybe their definition of food on the table was different. for chex it was scrounging around for his meal. for what he ate as a mouse, what made him plump as a mouse, did not fill his hunger as a human. so to escape such pains in his stomach, morphing into a mouse and eating a couple bread crumbs until he could find a decent human meal was his means of self-protection. but it was fun, he got to explore places he might not normally wander into. like some little eight year old exploring an abandon tree fort or shed only to find something interesting.
'Still.... thank you, Chex. It's nice to see somebody so honest and so open, it really is.' still putting in his own thought, was startled when he heard his name. how strange it was to actually hear his own name. looking at airyll with almost mild confusion couldn't help but like how it sounded on a woman's tongue. if his name was called it was by a lover, never by a woman. "yeah...yeah... nice to meet you too." smiling, he might as well died when she said, 'I think I like you.' poor little white boy who never had any friends so he completely misinterpreted this right off the bat. "whut... you can't i'm gay." but that made him look away in embarrassment his face starting to turn red. 'smooth... real smooth.'

this conversation was like a rubix cube. so confusing, it was a puzzle box. since chex was rather logically slow like that. rather spitting things out quick instead of actually thinking about what he was going to say. but as airyll, what a gorgeous name && spelling, explained her apartment chex became envious. "Must be nice, that and every day it like a challenge. entertainment and survival in one." smiling, listened to her talk and what not. and when she said she liked him chex had automatically pronounced he was gay. but it was embarrassing and his face was now a shade of red as he directed his albino eyes to the floor hoping to not receive immediate shunning, beating, or another negative process. but she was giggling, apparently finding his words funny.
poking his head back out of his shell, didn't exactly know why she was laughing. it wasn't a harsh giggle, it didn't sound like she was laughing AT him rather with him... even though cereal wasn't laughing. "well... it's true." poking his shoe at the ground, found this babble to become dull. there was only so much you could do standing a couple feet from each other just talking. they should go do something somewhere, chex needed a feminine friend in his life. and according to airyll's bio she liked male company it's been said that woman like having gay friends it might actually. but what to do... where to go? that and the fact she called him cute.
"let's get out of the prision, it's atmosphere is dull and boring. you seem springy so let's go to a park, or a bar, or... by the way how old are you?" the mention of a bar, hence legal drinking age, triggered the question. doing his sexy hair flip to get white locks out of his eyes, wondered how old she was. she looked out of school so over eighteen, but not old old so under twenty-five. "i'm twenty-one."

realization struck him like a frying pan in the face. never had he really looked at his orientation like that. 'It has no impact on what kind of person you are aside from who you'd rather sleep with, right?' he had never encountered a person that had said anything like this to him. not only was it logical, it was true. pity only a sliver of the world held this same opinion, but it was such a relief to find acceptance. smiling shyly, nodded, eyes glossy.
but as she launched off in a lil babble about how she had never been called springy. "well i guess it'd be more suited if you were a rabbit. but yeah, you've got a bounce of energy about you. mmhhmm." pursing his lips together to perform a fake-snob mmhhmm, looked away about the jail just as airy had kinda had a 'stop'. looking back at her, was momentarily concerned for why she looked like what she did. oblivious to what he had said about his age, thinking of it as a fact rather than an astonishment.
'Twenty-one, huh? You seem a lot younger, no offence.' nodding, with a yeah-i-get-that-a-lot look on his face, said "and i swear i don't use olay skin regenerates." but as she stated her own age, nodded and said "I can see it, but that's because i've been studying your features for the entire conversation since the prision isn't much to look at. but at first glance, you're much younger." hoping he didn't come off ignorant, didn't want to crush a potential friendship. 'However! Brilliant idea, master Chex, it's getting boring in here anyway. C'mon, how about I take you out to a pub or something for a meal? My treat, as an apology for the whole fiasco earlier. Sound okay?'
master chex? whoa this girl had hit her head. but as an arm was swung around his shoulder, instead of recoiling (as he would of done with almost anyone else) accepted the friendship greeting and returned it. "a pub, well... good thing it's your treat because i can't remember the last time i've had a meal bought for me." smiling, feeling much more relaxed, could hardly believe that this snake was the one that had tried to eat him. 'oh so much for expecting the unexpected.'

as their strides directed them towards the metal steps, avatar; the last air bender said 'You can't? That's atrocious. A lovely young man such as yourself should be treated often enough to be able to remember the last time it happened' shaking his head no, even though he could remember the last time he had been treated. it wasn't exactly an occasion he was proud of. a perfect example of his parasite behavior. some older man came onto him and chex played along with it for dinner and a drink. but when they got back to the man's apartment chex faked leaving something in the car, doubled back, shifted and run. all for a decent meal. with that memory in mind, quicked a glance at airyll out of the corner of his eyes. was he doing another act of parasite work?
'Welps, I shall fix that, then' suddenly feeling rude and tarnished, said quickly "you don't have to! don't feel obligated or anything. it's not exactly a new experience almost getting eaten." it was true, an owl had got him once and chex shifted back into human. he still had scars on his side though they were light from the owl's talons. but as they skipped off to see the wizard the wonderful wizard of oz down the stairs airy brought up a personal question. 'do you have a place to stay tonight?'
"hmm? yeah i do." but feeling that airy deserved the right to know more, started to describe his shelter. "i live in the slum of shelpey. it used to be an old shop that had been engulfed in flame. it's all boarded up now and it's next to an alley. so as a mouse i can get in and as a human i've made it home. it's dry, it's safe, it's warm, and it's home." pushing open the doors to the jail, let the cool outside air fill his lungs. as the double doors clicked behind them added, "it's nothing worth seeing, trust me."
AND SO THEY WALKED... and walked and walked and walked
...AND THEY ARRIVED! arrived...arrived...arrived... at a pub
feeling embarrassed to be taken out by a girl, a friend who happened to be a friend, entered the pub almost reluctantly. head down, followed airyll up to the counter. sitting down, looked about the place like the shy little mouse he really was. repeating what he had been saying the entire walk. "you really don't have to do this." yet NOT wanting to sound like he DIDN'T want it, because his stomach had a voice of it's own and it was babbling away.

'Quit it, you.' pouting, chex looked up and around the room. eyes falling to the light fixtures that hung above every table and then along the bar counter. it was a deep yellow, golden light that really did let the shadows roam. rather indistinguishable music in the background, and the chatter that the pub had to offer. it all seemed so innocent. but as chex's eyes fell to each person he could mentally label what they looked like. a family man that had just got off of work and was taking a break, a lonely individual looking for some, a gaggle of girls, some guys who were obviously buds just grabbing a bite to eat, an occasionally couple, and then the occasional pervert, rapist, serial killer, and what not. trying to expect the unexpected, never raised his expectations of life, so chex lived at the bottom of the cereal box.
a sharp 'may i take your order?' cut into chex's observations and labeling. looking around to the individual who was taking their order heard airy say lightly 'I'll have the chicken salad, please. Oh but could I be cheeky and have chips with that? You're a star. Oh, a drink? Um... yeah, I'll just have a cider. What do you want, Chex?' looking at airyll in disbelief, she was eating something HEALTHY when... well she didn't have to store up food because she actually KNEW when her last meal would be. "I'll take a cheeseburger..." as chex paused to muse around the 'individual that was taking their order asked' "how would you like that cooked?" umm...umm...umm... "medium? yeah, medium. NO rare." nodding, mused on more. he would of ordered a coke but they were at a bar. before the individual-who-was-taking-their-order could ask about his drink, chex said "captain morgan with coke."
feeling mildly happy with himself, turned to airyll with almost an accomplished look and said "thanks. my stomach started growling as soon as we sat down. those blokes to my left && their food smells really good." shifting around in his seat, ignoring his hunger pains encase at the last moment he was let down. it wouldn't be the first time and he learned to expect disappointment from people. but as his eyes wandered over to the blokes eating their food, heard a clatter in front of him as his drink was set down next to airyll's. picking it up and taking a grateful gulp adored how the gentle spin of alcohol ran down his throat.
putting the drink down, not wanting to push his limit and have to ask for a refill, would moderately sip here and there forcing the drink to last an entire meal. but as 'another' individual-that-would-of-taken-their-order-if-another-individual-didn't-get-there-first came up and asked "would you like some water?" nodding, gave a small smile as the feminine figure walked away. feeling mildly, well calm and slightly confused at the lack of hostility asked airyll "are people always this nice? or is it only because i'm here with you?" a clink of ice against glass as his water was set down in front of ickle-cereal and chex took no time in downing half of the water. smacking his lips in a very satisfied fashion.
