Something in the shadows moved.
The figure sat in the darkness of the corner, as far from the light as possible in the small space. The maintenance cell was streaked with musty light that filtered down from the ventilation grating above. The eerie yellow-orange light was striped across the concrete floor, illuminating black spots of gum, litter, and an assortment of unidentifiable objects strewn haphazardly around the cell.
A high-pitched whine emitted from the adjoining tunnel: the third rail glowed invisibly with a gathering electricity. Faintly, a rumble echoed down the surreal tunnel, vibrating in the still air. Dust showered down softly in and out of the half-light, settling in a thin layer on the gray floor. The whining grew to a louder squeal, piercing the tunnel: the rumble grew to a roar, and a blazing light swung in to view. With a vwoosh the subway screeched past the cell, casting a seizure of yellow-white strobe lights. A torrent of stale air was whipped past, slamming into the opposing wall. The noise was intense, and resounded unending off the tiled walls. Sound and light blurred together as the train bared past, shattering the senses. Finally it passed, and the subway train receded into the darkness once again, leaving the echoing clanks and screams of metal in its wake.
As the disrupted dust settled once more over the grimy tunnel, the figure slowly shifted again. It had seem unfazed by the passing of the train: it had not flinched, even when the harsh light and deafening roar filled the small cave. Now, it seemed to double in size and grow taller, moving in the abyssal shadows. As the light slowly returned to normal, it could be seen that the figure was a person: it had been sitting, and had stood up from its seat on a wooden crate. The figure glided forward, like a ghost, passing under the shafts of faulty lighting. Its -his- features could now be made out more clearly. A set of dark emerald eyes watched the world carefully from behind a ruffled screen of brown hair. His small nose flared as he tested the air, animal-like. The hooded eyes glittered as they took in the information and processed it. A new scent had come on the wave of air brought past by the train. His lips puckered for a moment in thought, then he stepped forward another step until he was highlighted in a shaft of light.
He pulled his slender hands from the front pocket of his hoodie, where they had been fiddling with something absently. The dull white item twirled in his fingers skillfully and he brought it up to shoulder height in his left hand. The details could be made out clearer now: it was a bone, about three and a half inches long, snapped off into a jutted point on one end. He twirled it again just as someone stepped in from the subway tunnel.
The unyielding eyes regarded the newcomer, but the manner of which the boy tilted his head was of curiosity.
"Hey," he started, raising an eyebrow. That's not Amber...she's a bit late. Who's this, though? Must be a Thief, if they're here. Who else, otherwise? Unless they're not in any guild...or worse, an Assassin...

"I wouldn't call it wandering," Alex replied, twirling the bleached bone in his fingers again. "I was waiting for someone."
He took a curious step forward. The girl in front of him definitely[/i] wasn't Amber, but who was she? He didn't think he'd ever seen her before. She obviously wasn't a Thief. Maybe she wasn't even a shapeshifter at all. But...what normal person in their right minds would have the idea to come down to a subway tunnel and brave the darkness of the catacombs...by themselves, no less. Surely this girl had some kind of backup, whether it be a weapon or a Shifted form. Otherwise, you'd have no form of self-defense in the dangerous underground.
"It IS a rather odd place to meet people though, I suppose," he allowed, gesturing with the hand that held the bone. "You're not who I was waiting for, but that's no reason why we can't talk. So what's your name, and what streak of insane boredom brought you down here?"
He vaguely came to the conclusion that spinning a fragment of bone might not be the best first impression, but he was having fun with this cameo. He felt like all he needed was a top hat and a cape, all in black, to complete the appearance. His personality had taken a swing that morning, and he felt slightly different than usual. More overly confident. Maybe it was the reassurance that he had finally picked a second in command that was lending his self-esteem a boost. Alex smirked. He'd TRY not to scare his single audience away.

"Date? No way," Alex nearly doubled over laughing, fully aware that this wasn't adding to the bad-ass feeling he'd had when he woke up this morning. Ah well. It was fun while it lasted. Still chuckling, he straightened up and held out a hand -the one not holding the bone-. "I'm Alex," he offered, regarding the girl with interest. "I think we know each other from somewhere. School, maybe? It's a wonder we've never talked,
"I'm waiting down here for a friend. It's kind of important that she shows up, but since she's not here yet, then I guess we can talk in the meantime! I'd think that wandering around the subway alone isn't the best way to pass the time, eh?"

"NO! I can't, I'm late, I have to go NOW!" Amber angrily exclaimed from the front door of the restaurant. A few customers looked at her, but most ignored her. Those who were regulars were used to her going off places. Without waiting for an answer, she pushed off the ground with her sneakers and burst off like a bullet. Her jet-black hair, tied with a rich blue hair band, whipped with the wind as she dodged through the crowd. She was nearly 10 minutes late, including the time it would take her to get there. Her legs pumped with adrenaline and her arms flew by her side. Luckily she was very agile and had a light body built so she was quick on her feet and had a lot of energy and stamina.
The sun shone brightly overhead and warmed up the day although it was still winter. Few gray clouds were in sight, but not enough to cover up the light that brightened the day. The world was alive, well almost. Normally it would've been very crowded, but it wasn't summer and school had started again. There were always people there, but sometimes not a lot. Crows and seagulls soared overhead, cawing loudly which could be heard from the ground. Amber silently wished she could just spend the day away at the beach in relaxation, but she had business to attend to and it was important. Alex hadn't told her what, but he was leader, what he said goes.
As she sprinted on, her light blue shirt waved wildly even though her black hoodie covered it pretty well. The day was warm, but the sun's rays didn't reach the subway tunnels, it would be rather cold. Because of this, she had decided to wear long khaki-colored pants. They were a little baggy, but they would do. At least they don't absorb the cold like jeans. Amber shivered in disgust and randomly stuck out her tongue at the mere thought.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Amber's rich golden eyes searched the streets around her while she caught her breath. Cars zoomed past as the light finally turned green. The nearby buildings towered over her, but she wasn't looking for a building. An annoyed cough alerted her to a figure standing tall to her side. She hadn't realized she stopped in the middle of sidewalk. Amber looked down in embarrassment and swiftly stepped back to let him cross the street before the sign changed. Amber sighed as he walked by, she didn't have the time to get into an argument. She didn't have the time to do anything but get to the subway right now!
She covered her eyes with her hand in a salute sign and squinted her eyes against the sun. Amber furiously glanced around as her ragged breathing finally died down. Building, car, car, person, building, door, shop, dog, building, car, person, car, shop, person, person, dog, stairs, person, dog, buil... wait! Amber turned her head back to the stairs, that has to be it! She had never been there before, but subways went down obviously, and those stairs were leading underground.
Amber was in such a rush she couldn't stop shifting as she prayed for the sign to change. After what seemed like days, the light changed and the cars slowly came to a stop. Amber dashed across the street and stomped down the stairs. With her hand sliding on the rail, she began slowing down as it became darker and finally lighter as the subway lights began showing. She zipped up her hoodie and stuck her hands into her pant pockets to keep the warmth trapped from the slight cold. Maybe it wasn't that cold, but she certainly hated it, growing up at the beach and all. What she came to see was unexpected though.
Alex stood at the entrance of the maintenance cell while an unknown figure stood before him. Amber had sure she'd seen her, but at the same time she hadn't. Maybe I met her and forgot? But I remember faces well... just not names. She inaudibly sighed, and listened on their conversation. "-but since she's not here yet, then I guess we can talk in the meantime! I'd think that wandering around the subway alone isn't the best way to pass the time, eh?" Before the girl could even reply, Amber came in with a witty response, "And now she is." To add dramatics, she bowed and rolled her eyes to show she was joking. Looking to Alex she informed, "Sorry I'm late, dad was trying to keep me at the house." Well restaurant, but there wasn't much of a difference since she spent most of her time there instead.
((It's not as good as I like, but it works.))

Absently the bone twirled in the boys fingers again, almost skillfully. But Alex's attention wasn't on the fragment in his hand: instead he was looking at the girl in front if him curiously, unaware if he was being rude. He knew her from somewhere, that was for sure. School, maybe? Must have been. Mentally, he imagined a picture of the classrooms, and then pictured her in there. Where did she fit in...? He played around with the image just a bit more.
"Aha!" He exclaimed, delight lighting up his eyes as he met her gaze. "I know you! You're the girl that helped me out at school that one time during math! Lets see....Caela, was it?"
He felt proud of himself that he had managed to remember someone whom he had barely talked to. But before he could say more or get a confirmation, he was aware of another person's presence.
"Geez, are the subways really so easy to fi-Amber!" He returned her bow, laughing at the gesture.
"That's okay. As long as you could make it, you're in the clear," he smiled at his soon-to-be Second in Command. But...how was he supposed to tell her if there was a non-Shifter around? Or...maybe she WAS a shifter. But he didn't know for sure. Either way, it was meant to be a private meeting, so he figured she'd have to leave. He turned to Caela.
"Umm...mind if we talk alone for a while? It's kind of important,"

((Ah, well. I had to get passed all that... extra stuff. xD))
"Geez, are the subways really so easy to fi-Amber!" Amber breathed out a laugh with a light smile as he copied the gesture. "That's okay. As long as you could make it, you're in the clear," he kindly smiled. Woo, off the leash. She was sure she wouldn't get in trouble anyway, Alex wasn't that kind of guy. He turned his head toward the other girl, his droopy hair flung to the side from the action. "Umm...mind if we talk alone for a while? It's kind of important," he murmured to her. Amber followed his gaze to a teenager, though she was slightly older. This time, Amber got a good look at her.
She was only a few inches taller, but she had that... sense, of an older person. In many ways, she kind of looked like Amber, that is, if she were older. Like herself, the teen was lean enabling her to move fast, hair tied in a hair band, although her hair was light brown while Amber's was black. Her eyes seemed like an endless abyss, black as night, but looked at very closely, could be seen as a very dark brown color. Adding to this, the light above was lit with an eerie glow. Of course it lit up the path ways, but it didn't do so well light-wise.
...Huh." The girl momentarily blinked in confusion before she let out a lopsided smile. She uncaringly shook her head and shrugged, "I get it, I get it. Whatever. I'll leave you two alone." She glanced around, maybe looking for somewhere to leave. There's only one entrance... Amber pondered suspiciously. Without a glance, she spun around and left. Her skinny figure was devoured by the shadows leaving Amber staring after her. At the edge of disappearance, she halted in her tracks and tilted her head around, "Thanks for helping to pass the time, Alex." At her comment, she darkly chuckled without humor, and Amber wondered what they had been doing.
After a few minutes of silence, Amber cocked her eyebrows at him and asked, "What was that about?" Her mind turned over the possibilities. Maybe just getting rid of unfinished business? Talking to another shifter like her? Girlfriend? She blinked off her thoughts and smirked at him, trying to hold in her giggles. "Did you get yourself a girlfriend?" At this, Amber crossed her arms across her chest and leaned on one foot. Her eyes strayed over to the dirty bone he was messing with in his hand. Wow, every time she saw him, he got weirder and weirder.

Alex nodded to Caela as she left, but the saying 'out of sight, our of mind' was far beyond him at this point. No, she must still be there. There was no way that she'd simply leave: any teenager with a sense of humor would stick around to snoop. Calea wasn't let off the hook just yet.
But he couldn't outright accuse her of still being there, right? That would seem stupid, and even more stupid if she wasn't there. What kind of an idiot would he look like then? He turned from the shadows and shook his head ever so slightly, realizing that his important meeting with Amber would have to be postponed.
Acting as though they were truly alone, Alex laughed. "Girlfriend? Caela? No, of course not! She's just someone I know from school who I just so happened to come across while waiting for you." Wow. That sounded really suspicious. He cast another glance into the shadows. What was Calea doing now?
Alex looked back to Amber, a seriousness in his eyes that was enhanced by the dim lighting. "Amber," he started, thinking that this would be actually rather fun to do, whether Amber understood or agreed to any of the following or not. Nonetheless, he fought to hold back a smirk and waited a moment to calm his laughter that was threatening to burst. Fortunately for him, a pause fit well with the tone he was trying to create.
"Amber, you know that I'd never think about someone I've barely known." He looked her in the eyes, wondering what she could read in his. "But....I've known you for much longer. And I trust you, Amber. I trust you with everything that I have and am responsible for. I," he paused, wondering how he'd word his next phrase. No, not enough time! It had to be as smooth as he could make it. He couldn't think, just go for it. Oh well. What a fun day for him this would be.
"I want to know: will you take it all on with me?" With a faint grin, Alex leaned forward and took Amber's lips in his own, closing his eyes and trying to make it as pleasant for his non-girlfriend as possible. After all, she hadn't exactly...agreed to this. But if she'd gotten the metaphor, then maybe she'd have understood.

Alex briefly nodded and turned back to Amber. At her query he laughed, "Girlfriend? Caela?" So that was her name.... "No, of course not! She's just someone I know from school who I just so happened to come across while waiting for you." At this news, Amber arched her eyebrow and stared at him disbelievingly. Really? Well that just sounded wrong. Who would walk down in a subway tunnel when the subway didn't even come until a few hours later? Unless she was looking for him... or she really did come down here... or he's lying.
Amber vigorously shook her head, Alex wouldn't lie... at least, she thought he wouldn't. He intently stared at her, now serious. The dim light added to the dark effect, his eyes casting shadows and his face melted into the darkness. "Amber..." He trailed off. Amber knew the look, he was thinking of what to say. She smiled and almost laughed. So serious and suddenly so confused, then again, she was like that all the time.
A few times his lips twitched, what the hell was he doing? Better yet, what was he thinking? She wasn't sure she wanted to know. The paused added to the seriousness, but his face totally ruined it. "Amber, you know what that I'd never think about someone I've barely known." Really? Amber didn't even know who that girl was. Most of the time his mind was on gang business anyway. Maybe he was going "incognito"? She knew the girl, Caela, was still somewhere in the darkness, listening to their conversation, but had Alex known? Amber convinced herself he did know, otherwise he wouldn't be in such a high position.
"But.... I've known you for much longer. And I trust you, Amber. I trust you with everything that I have and am responsible for. I..." So now we're talking about responsibility? Defiantly a hidden message. She knew it was about the gang, but she wasn't sure exactly... yet. While he was separately thinking, Amber was breaking down his statement.
She really wasn't sure if Alex knew her or Caela better, but she had known him pretty well after getting to know him. Yes, he did trust her. They're both shifters and in the same gang. But... she got stuck. 'I trust you with everything that I have and am responsible for.' But... that would be the gang wouldn't it? Yeah, she's in the gang, but everyone in it is responsible. She was sure they weren't held by just Alex. The gang was held by their commonness.
His voice cut her meandering thoughts, "I want to know: will you take it all on with me?" A slight smile caught on his lips and he leaned forward and kissed her. WHAT THE FUCK?!?! She almost pushed him away, but his words caught her. What did he mean? But her mind was too caught up with the moment. His warm lips softly pushed against her own. This... wasn't exactly how she thought her first kiss would be.
After a few seconds she pulled away, lightly. She was sure he didn't really like her, like that. THUNK. CRASH! A loud echo bounced off the walls seeming louder than it probably was. Distracted, her head whipped toward the darkness, almost giving her whiplash. The boxes nearby were now spilled over and dust scattered into the air. She drew her head back in surprise. A small bird lay in an odd position on the ground. Few of its feathers drifted in the air mixing with the debris. Amber blinked in confusion. What the heck was a hawk doing in the subway? Unless...

Alex was relieved when Amber didn't shove him away, and simply smiled politely at her as she pulled away gently after a few seconds. All in all, we was pleased: that hadn't gone so bad after all. And maybe she had gotten his hidden meaning.
A sudden crash of crates and boxes confirmed his suspicion that Caela was still in the shadows, watching them. However, he was taken by surprise when he turned to confront her: it wasn't actually...her. He stared in a mixture of shock and confusion at the spot where a dusky hawk sat among the debris. It looked as if it had crashed into the pile of crates.
Alex shook his head and turned to face it fully, crossing his arms. "Okay, no normal hawk would be down here in the subways." Of course, he wasn't SURE it was Caela...but he was close to being sure. Just in case it WAS another shifter, though, he carefully avoided saying who he thought it was. He'd leave that up to them, since they'd be feeling caught red-handed and would most likely think that Alex knew everything about them already. That's just how people act when they're caught in the act.
OOC|| Didn't add too much more, but I'm done at least.
