The petite girl carefully folded her menu. She glanced up at him as he spoke. "A spirit roaming free, huh? Sounds like the kind of life I lead...."
"Oh really,"
She replied rather innocently.
"Where do you come from?"
She paused as the blood washed from his face, leaving it a deathly white. She leaned forward further and reached one smooth hand out to touch his. What was the matter with him? Was it something she said? She didn't think so, but...Her fingers just brushed his hand when he dropped the menu. She studied his face. It was drawn into an expression of confusion and shock. Then he slowly looked up at her.
"D-Destiny?" He whispered. Destiny felt her heart constrict. Amber eyes opened wide. It was him! She could feel tears welling up. She reached up with a trembling hand to shove them angrily away.
"N-n-no!"
She gasped. It wasn't supposed to be like this. She wasn't supposed to be recognized! She despised her human form, and she despised anyone know her as a human! She had to get away from him. Shoving her chair back, she stood and raced out of the door, hands over her eyes, tears streaming.
Once she was outside, she looked around, trying to find away out. She couldn't deal with her past anymore. First her sister, her father, Morocco, the whole human thing, and now him.
She turned and ran to an alley, and attempted to shift into a fox. Only she was so distressed she couldn't concentrate enough to do so. She leaned heavily with her back against the alley wall, and slid down. She laid her head on her knees, and used her arms to hid herself from the world. Great, she couldn't even shift properly.
OhOhSea://
Yay, even more drama!

Rune was speechless. It was her...? Really? His childhood friend, what had ever happened to her? They were the best of buddies: was it because he left that they never talked? No, he'd cut himself off from the world when he'd done that. It was all his fault. He felt elated that he had finally found her again, even in human form. He had to admit, she looked just as good on two legs as on four. ((lol...can be interpreted slightly differently...^^; ))
He was about to stand up and rush to give her a hug when she beat him to his feet and ran out, leaving the boy extremely confused. Wait...it was her, so why'd she leave? Maybe she didn't recognize him? Had he scared her?
Maybe she didn't want to remember him?
Rune's face fell but his eyes were still concerned: he pushed his chair away from the table and ran after her, glaring at the other customers who were watching him with patronizing looks on their faces. He made it to the door and flew through it, only to be stopped again in the middle of the sidewalk. Where'd she go?
The boy whirled around, searching the street, but he couldn't find her anywhere. He considered calling out for her, but decided against it. Maybe his dog form could sniff her out? There was nowhere to shift, though, unless he ran around to an alleyway. He decided to go for it.
Turning quickly he focused his thoughts on his natural canine form as he dashed into an alley, but skidded to a halt. Nevermind...found her.
Destiny was leaned against the grimy alley wall, her knees drawn close and her head buried in her arms. She looked like she could be crying...but why?
Rune took a tentative step forward, not sure what to do now that he had found her.
"Destiny...? What's wrong...?"

Destiny's shoulders shook silently. She was sobbing her heart out, but she did it silently. It wouldn't do if someone heard her and came looking. She heard footsteps and she stiffened. She swallowed her sobs and quickly wiped tears away from her rather bloodshot eyes. She sniffed quietly and glanced up to see who had come to see a lonely girl cry.
Rune.
In a millisecond, Destiny was on her feet, ready to run again. "Destiny...? What's wrong...?" At those tender words, she catapulted forward, and tightly grasped Rune around the waist. She no longer tried to hide her sobs, but let them come freely. Each sob seemed like it was ripping her heart out a little bit more. Finally her sobs stopped, and she hiccuped. Pulling away slightly, she wiped at her eyes again.
"It's just - ...seeing you reminds me of...Everything. My dad, my s-sister, Brimstone, M-morocco..."
Her voice trailed off as she thought of Morocco. He had broken her heart, betrayed her trust, and he never even tried to make it up to her. Not to mention, Brimstone had been right there to rub it all in. Destiny was sure, that with time, she would be able to love Rune. No. Whatever it took, she couldn't open her heart to love again. She pulled herself out of Rune's embrace(?) and stood straight. She took a natural pose for her, one that a queen might take on. Her voice came out calm, still.
"Thank you for you concern Rune. But I shall be quite alright now."
Destiny bit her lip, trying to keep from bursting out in tears. She wanted to throw herself back at him, and be free to love him, but it was only with the strongest self control - and the thought of Morocco - that kept her where she was.

The boy made a grunt of surprise as Destiny rushed to hug him. He was taken aback at her sudden break-down, but tried his best to comfort her. He hugged her close and rested his cheek on the top of her head. Listening to her speak, he nodded softly, trying to calm her crying down.
"It's just - ...seeing you reminds me of...Everything. My dad, my s-sister, Brimstone, M-morocco..."
Very quietly he replied, "But what about the happier times? Don't I remind you of those?" It was so soft, however, that she may not have heard.
Suddenly she pulled away from him, and Rune thought for a split second that she had indeed caught his words. But no: instead she composed herself rigidly and stood straight, looking at him squarely in the eyes.
"Thank you for you concern Rune. But I shall be quite alright now."
He regarded her curiously, wondering what she could possibly be talking about. Though she wasn't visibly crying, he could feel her despair radiating. He took one step closer, then froze, not knowing what to do.
"Dest...you just told me yourself that it's something hard to shake off. And- I'm still here, so obviously you aren't feeling better already. Please, share it with me? I need to know what's going on,"

Destiny relished the feeling of him holding her close, but she knew it wouldn't last. Eventually, he would leave. Just like Morocco. "But what about the happier times? Don't I remind you of those?" She heard him whisper as she pulled away. 'Of course!' She wanted to scream, but she couldn't. She couldn't say anything, but what she had to. "Thank you for you concern Rune. But I shall be quite alright now."
Destiny nearly flinched away as he stepped forward. She ached with every cell to be able to hold him close, but she couldn't. She felt his curious gaze, and she wondered what he thought of her mention of Morocco, probably nothing good.
"Dest...you just told me yourself that it's something hard to shake off. And- I'm still here, so obviously you aren't feeling better already. Please, share it with me? I need to know what's going on." She hesitated, wanting to tell him it all, but scared of what he would think. Her father was not the nicest fox on the block, that was for sure. And the rest of her past, not pretty.
She heaved a sigh, and her rigid look disappeared. At his familiar tone, and the affection nickname, she sat back down, patting the ground next to her.
"It's not pretty, but I'll tell you what I can. My family's been against me, even a birth. I was born, with only one other in my litter. My father k-killed my sister."
Destiny sat up straight, and angerly spat out,
"It was stupid, too. The only reason she's dead is because she wasn't perfect enough. Wait. I suppose that doesn't make any sense."
The slender girl sighed in frustration and bit her lip. She then spoke carefully,
"My family believes that they are a perfect race. They pretty much believe they are gods. If you aren't perfect, down you go. My sister was weak. So she died. And I left as soon as I could. But Brimstone follows me everywhere, trying to convince me to return to my family where I'll 'be treated like a queen.' As if I care.
"I left my family and their ways, because I wanted to be free. Free of those restrictions and those laws. Free of what killed my sister. Instead, I only found more heartache and ruin. I met M-morocco. I thought he was everything I wanted and needed, only..."
Destiny trailed off, unable to go any further. Her slender arms wrapped around her legs, pulling them up tight to her chest. She stared ahead as she spoke, not seeing the brick wall that was in front of her. Suddenly she glanced up at Rune.
"You don't...hate me do you? Or my family? Because you can't hate them. If you hate them, you hate me. I am my family."
She said fiercely, as if trying to prove she wasn't good for him. Even though they had caused her pain and sufferage, she still was intensely loyal to them. It was something that was instilled to her, and ever other member of her family. She watched Rune's face anxiously, trying to read every emotion that passed over his features.

Rune sighed and sat down beside Destiny, feeling her heavy emotions settling in before she even began explaining. He listened quietly, idly playing with the fringes of his jeans. He bit his lip when she mentioned Morocco: he realized that that had been the only time he had reacted during her story. Not that the other parts didn't touch him. He just felt a sudden strong emotion sweep over him at the mention of this Morocco. Who was he? And why did Rune not know of him? He felt a void of despair slowly rip open inside of him. Had...Destiny been dating another guy? Rune shook his head slightly. Well, she had the looks and charm. And she was most certainly ALLOWED to date other guys. It wasn't like she was his, and his alone. He sighed. Though he wished it, he'd never be able to speak those words to her. And after they'd been apart for so long...her life must have changed so much. Surely their childhood crush was long gone by now? Yet his hand sought out his heart and laid against his chest lightly, feeling the beating of his pulse. And yet...he still felt that way.
He was brought back to earth when Destiny asked him a direct question. "Hate you? Why in the world would I hate you? You were my best friend growing up, and I don't think that anything's changed since then, has it? And I mean, sure, you have a crazy over-protective brother, but that didn't stop us from hanging out together, did it? Why would I suddenly stop wanting to be with you? How could I possibly stand to not be with you? I don't know how I survived these past years of my life, but certainly I was thinking of you. I wanted to see you again, but I couldn't, for reasons beyond my control. If that isn't dedication, then I don't know what is. But I'm pretty certain it isn't hate, toward you OR your family." He realized he was rambling and looked down, immediately picking at the ripped cuffs of his jeans, suddenly very interested in the way they were fraying.

Destiny carefully monitered the look on Rune's face since she'd finish with her little story. He had been quietly playing with a frayed end on his jeans, but then he had seemed slightly stressed when she mentioned Morocco. Destiny's ruby lips slipped down in a slight frown. She randomly wondered what would've happened if Morocco hadn't betrayed her. Would she have met Rune again? How would Rune and Morocco feel about one another?
The female startled slightly as Rune's lyrics broke her out of her train of thoughts, "Hate you? Why in the world would I hate you? You were my best friend growing up, and I don't think that anything's changed since then, has it? And I mean, sure, you have a crazy over-protective brother, but that didn't stop us from hanging out together, did it? Why would I suddenly stop wanting to be with you? How could I possibly stand to not be with you? I don't know how I survived these past years of my life, but certainly I was thinking of you. I wanted to see you again, but I couldn't, for reasons beyond my control. If that isn't dedication, then I don't know what is. But I'm pretty certain it isn't hate, toward you OR your family." Destiny's worry filled orbs softened, and she leaned closer towards Rune.
"Do you really mean that?"
She said softly, willing him to look up so she could read the sincerity, or insincerity, in his eyes. The tears in her eyes had begun to dry at the beginning of Rune's little speech, and she rubbed a single tear off her cheek. Her soul was in her eyes, making them compelling and spellbounding. She wanted the truth. She wanted to know exactly what Rune thought of her.

Rune was almost startled, and he looked down, meeting her compelling gaze.
"Of course it is! I can't think of one reason to lie to you about something that means so much to me," he broke off and found that he'd lost his voice, but he couldn't turn away. Her presence next to him was something he'd dreamed about for the past however-many years since they were separated. He had missed her so much.
"God, Dest. Look at you." He turned and met her gaze. "You're still just as beautiful as you were back then...except now you're more grown up. We were best friends back then, and as far as I can tell, there shouldn't be a reason why we still aren't. I would never lie to you, especially not about being your friend. You should know that." He smiled at her, a genuinely happy smile. If he was in his canine form, his tail would have been wagging.
