Danny quirked an eyebrow at Alex's strange reply. Thief over assassin, huh? Faint memories of past victims played in Danny's head, reminding him of his occasional violent activities. They had become even less frequent than before, however; he hadn't even touched his knife in the last three months. It's really been that long, hasn't it? Thinking it over, the raven-shifting teen was quite surprised.
"I guess it depends on who you are," said Danny, breaking their eye contact by suddenly turning away. "I suppose being a thief would be better..." He let his sentence trail off as he began pondering once more.
Thieves and assassins. They were obviously of some significance, or it wouldn't have been bothering him this much. But what could they mean?! Did it have something to do with school? No, Danny couldn't recall hearing about them in class...he must have heard it on the streets. Did they have something to do with shifters, then?
Wait! Yes, that was it! Danny silently congratulated himself for his small victory. Now he was one step closer to figuring it out. Of course, I could just ask Alex...nah.

Alex narrowed his eyes, trying to figure out Danny's twitch of the eyebrow. Did that mean that he was an Assassin? Did it mean that he simply wasn't in a guild?
"That's easy. I'm Alex." The boy said, laughing. "And I wholeheartedly agree that being a Thief is much better than being an Assassin." The fox shifter smiled, thinking that Danny had indeed caught on. So was it a safe bet to assume that Danny was a shifter, too? After all, only Shifters knew about the guilds. Maybe he should shift and see what Danny did in reply.
And somehow, Alex suddenly felt very self-conscious about Shapeshifting. He'd never felt awkward shifting in front of someone before, though. Most likely it was because he knew the other person, and they had been in both forms together plenty of times. But shifting in front of someone he just recently met felt the same as being in swim trunks for the first time in a year. Unsure...or nervous?
It would be easier if he actually KNEW Danny.
"I'd shift, but someone might be watching. So probably it isn't the best of ideas,"

Danny smiled, but said nothing in return. Whatever thieves and assassins were supposed to be, Alex really supported the thieves' side. Suddenly, a possibility popped into Danny's head; what if Alex was a shifter? Danny discreetly glanced at his rooftop companion, seriously pondering if it was true. It WOULD make sense...only shifters were supposed to know about the two, right?
"I'd shift, but someone might be watching. So probably it isn't the best of ideas."
Danny's eyebrows shot up in surprise, and his smile practically lit up into a grin. He was right! "That was a pretty blunt way of revealing yourself, but I guess it works," said the teen with a hint of amusement. "But I think you're wrong; there's no one up here but us." He then spread his arms for effect. "And as we've already discussed, nobody ever looks up."

What was with his constant smiling? Alex was slightly unnerved by the other boy's lack of variation in facial expressions. He considered frowning incessantly, just to see what kind of a reaction that provoked.
That moment passed, however, and Alex was taken by surprise at Danny's reply to the fox-shifter's remark about changing forms.
"Blunt way to reveal myself? But you'd already caught on, hadn't you? About the Thieves, and the Assassins...?" To him, at least, it had seemed like Danny had figured the whole thing out. He'd replied using the names of the guilds. Who else would have been able to guess at that?
Alex looked down again at the streets below, then across the street at the facing buildings and their dark windows. "Well, someone might still be watching. We've been dancing for the past while, and I bet that if anyone had happened to be watching THAT, they're still watching." He cast a curious glance into the windows again before turning to face the raven-haired teen.

Danny shook his head at the Alex's confusion, resisting the urge to laugh. "Nope. Well...I sort of thought you were a shifter, but I wasn't entirely sure." For a split second after he finished, Danny looked thoughtful. Then, he continued. "I was positive that 'thieves and assassins' had something to do with shifters, though. For the life of me, I can't remember what they are!" He crossed his arms in annoyance, as though he were bothered by not being able to figure it out.
"Well, someone might still be watching. We've been dancing for the past while, and I bet that if anyone had happened to be watching THAT, they're still watching." said Alex, causing Danny to suddenly look around. The other teen way right; below them were many apartment or office buildings, their shadowy windows looking out from all sides. If the occupants where to peer out at the right angle, they'd get a perfect view of the two boys. Kinda creepy. "Okay, so now it's definitely a problem. How are we going to get down?" And how are we going to do it in less than ten minutes?

Alex stared at him, dumbfounded. "You just guessed at it?" He asked, blankly. "Like...with no real knowledge about the guilds and whatnot?" Alex felt very stupid at the moment. He let out a mental groan and reminded himself to never try something as risky as that again. What if someone ELSE had guessed, too, only they weren't a shifter? Uh oh.
Alex nodded as Danny seemed to finally catch on. The rooftop, no matter how high, wasn't a safe place from prying eyes. And anyway, what if, like, Google Earth decided that it was going to update its image right then and there? Or what if the government was watching them from their satellites? ...Well, if they'd ever been watching, they probably would have seen a shifter change forms by now. They didn't exactly go underground to shift, anyway. "We could take the stairs," Alex offered, before realizing that, though the stairs had been open when he had first come up here, someone might have locked them by now. "But they might be locked for the night. We should go check."

Danny couldn't help but chuckle slightly at the astounded look on the other boy's face. "You just guessed at it?" Alex asked, his voice monotone with disbelief. Danny could only shrug, a huge grin on his face. "Sorry," said the raven-haired teen, his tone rather amused, "I had SOME knowledge of the guilds, if it's any consolation."
A skeptical eyebrow shot up into Danny's bangs as he formed a rather unconvinced expression. It conflicted oddly with his ever present grin, although said grin was more of a smirk. "I suppose that's the best option, considering," he said, lacking a great deal of enthusiasm in his voice. Her turned to walk towards the door, but broke out into a light-hearted smile. "If we're lucky, they don't lock their doors until midnight." If we're UNlucky, they locked them an hour ago, thought the taller boy. He mentally pushed the pessimism away. I'm trying to focus on happier things, thank you.

The fox shifter let out something resembling a mix between a groan and a laugh. "A BIT of consolation." He shook his head, wondering again at the chances of a non-shifter having figured it out.
"If we're lucky, they don't lock their doors until midnight." Hmm. That was a possibility that Alex liked the thought of.
"Well, it's best to check anyway. If they're open, then awesome. If not, then we're really only left with one option. Might as well see if there's the chance that we can take the stairs like normal people." The teenager sauntered toward the rooftop doors, wondering what the two of them would find if he were to pull on the handles.
