Xara's concentration broke for a moment and she took a quick look in the mirror, flooring the gas peddle and zipping down the highway. "The hospital is close." she said quietly, "We'll make it, Karla, we will." Karla could not breath. She'd gone...deaf. Her world was being torn apart again and as she stared at the young girl in the back of the car, gasping for air, clinging to life like a weak, wet kitten... There was a jerk in the car and Karla was thrown against the door, her head opening in gush of blood. Xara fought violently with the steering and the tires squealed in anguish as they dug into the asphalt. The world outside the car was spinning darkness, and Karla's vision had faded long enough to give Xara time to stop them short of catapulting off a cliff. The silence was eerie. The purr of the engine and the hiss of steam from the tires, the smell of smoke. Xara was gazing out the windshield, her eyes lidded and dark. Her breathing was slow, deliberate, and Karla followed her gaze blearily. Five men came from one car. Each of them sure the three women were too injured and weak to retaliate. They were right. But they weren't stupid. Xara watched them come. "Xara..." Karla warned, her old, confident voice back. It seemed to come back only in great danger. Xara ignored her, still staring. The time slowed painfully, and Karla shook like an overexcited puppy. It was limbo, pure, quiet, peaceful. Determined and definite. silent... Xara jerked suddenly and the vehicle lunged forward. She ripped the steering wheel right, clipping the other car and sending it reeling. Their car faltered, and the shock was painful, but Karla stole another look at Sephira. She was still breathing. Karla prayed for it. The men fought and swore and Xara hugged the shoulder of the road. With another jerk of the wheel she swung the car around, stopped, revved the engine and charge. She clipped two of the men, hitting and killing the other head on. She winced. "Oops." But her foot was planted firmly on the peddle, forcing it to the floor as the men gathered themselves. Karla faded in between consciousness and not, but Xara's face was stone determined as she navigated through the streets. They squealed to a stop in the hospitals ambulance area and rushed in, Xara with Sephira cradled in her arms, Karla staggering behind. Nurses and doctors rushed to her aid, taking Sephira away. They took her away. Where was Xara? The din was deafening. The cubical blurred into existence and Karla woke to the sound of soft sobbing. It was Xara. "Is Sephira okay?"Xara looked up, smiling wetly. She was obviously relieved, her eyes and face flushed with tears. But... "Sephira is okay, she's fine, she's on a drip now for the pain but should be home tomorrow night.." Karla sighed and lay back on her pillows, the machine strapped to her chest verbalizing her relaxed heart rate. She laboriously turned her head to face Xara, who bit her lip against more tears. "so why are you crying?" Xara coughed to cover a sob and turned her face from the woman. Karla noticed shamefully how beautiful she thought Xara looked. Her long red hair, fair skin. Deep, thoughtful, green eyes... "I'm just happy you're alive." A doctor came in, "Ah Ms. Daskalov, I see you've joined us." he examined her over once, lightly. "You should be okay to get up and around now. Actually, do that, get your blood pumping and motor skills going." Xara nodded, "Thank you." Karla was already pulling her clothes on. "Take me to her."[/blockquote][/ul]

Darkness was all around her once more. The pain was gone. She stood there for a minute soaking it all in before feeling her rib cage. Nothing. "Oh no, not again..." Her words echoed as she began walking to nowhere. Again the man she had killed appeared before her, yet he was not covered in blood this time. He looked as he had before he came bursting through her window, the hooded coat covering his face, all except the grin he had plastered on his face. She frowned at the sight of the man, "What do you want?" She called out to him.
"You, of course. And the woman you were with. You're shifters. You hold the power to commune with nature. As scientists, we hope to harness that power for ourselves. But we need you shifters to do that." He held out his hand towards her as if expecting his words to win her over.
"I'm not going with you." She spat at him, only to receive a harsh laugh in response. "It doesn't matter if you do or not. You're in no position to fight us. Hell, you barely avoided death as it is. All they need to do is find you. And I'm sure where ever you are, that woman is." He replied in a cold tone.
It bothered her that every time she went to the dark place, he was always there. "Why do you keep appearing here in my dreams?"
"You killed me. Isn't it only natural that I would be upset and haunt you in return? Besides, your dreams were too happy and mushy. So I decided to 'spice' them up for you. I'll never let you forget that night." He snickered as he faded away, his last sentence echoing in the never ending darkness that surrounded her.
Sephira shifted a bit in her sleep, her blood pressure rising slightly and a cold sweat appearing on her forehead. It was clear she was having a nightmare. The pain killers could only help with the her physical pain.

that wasn't the half of it. Xara arrived at the hospital with the girl in her arms, begging for help. Karla followed only to see the girl safe and collapsed on the floor. Luckily, Xara never had the initiative to become a doctor because she'd started to panic, convinced that her best friend was dead already. When the nurses got her into a bed and on an IV her condition stabilized almost instantly, but the experience was traumatic in any case. Karla couldn't know just by looking at her but, despite the fact that she was furious with her friend and would likely never forgive her for the turmoil she'd been put through, Xara was terrified. Karla pulled on her pants under the gown and took the gown off, turning from Xara as she pulled her shirt over her head. "Bring me to her, Xara, please."Xara was speechless, and the hurt on her would have been painfully evident, but Karla was too worried. Xara merely nodded, still biting her lip. Karla ignored her friends attempt to help her and Xara swallowed her rejection bitterly, convincing herself Karla was just worried. After all the hell she'd been put through and everything she'd done for her... They reached the ICU and walked right in. The nurses did not protest. Xara waited at the doorway and watched dejectedly as Karla walked towards the bed and sat promptly beside it, clasping the girls hands in her own. "She looks much better..." But Karla wasn't listening. She merely sat next to the bed, coddling the girl. Xara could understand. She herself had migrated between both rooms, and had talked to the girl while she slept. But...she was the one who'd taken Karla in after the subway incident and then taken care of her everyday and sat with her through all of that shit, and then this and...all she wanted was some recognition, or affection, or something. Anything. "Karla?" [/blockquote] [/ul]

She wasn't sure what was going on, but she could hear voices echoing around her. They were too muffled to make out who it was exactly. Suddenly, she was thrown into a white room, with lost of machines and a bed. There were people there. Karla? And some other woman... And was that...Sephira in the bed? She had a tube down her throat and was hooked up to an IV. Her hair looked a mess and dry blood covered her lips. She looked a wreck.
She started to freak out, not knowing what was going on. She turned, only to come face to face with...her mother! "Mom?" She choked out.
"Yes dear, it's me. I came to let you know everything's going to be alright. God doesn't need you with him just yet. Someone else needs you here more right now." Her mom spoke as she pointed to Karla who was sitting at her bedside. Sephira turned and looked to the woman and nodded, tears rolling down her cheeks before turning to look back at her mother. "I'm glad you took the time out of your birthday every year to come visit and talk with me. You're father enjoyed listening to you as well."
Sephira paused, her eyes widened. She fell silent for a moment. "F-father was with you? H-how long?" Her mother pulled her into a hug, trying to keep her from breaking down, "He's been with me for a little over a year now, keeping watch over you. He appologizes for not writing you back, he never got the chance. He was sent over to Iraq and was caught in a suicidal bombing only a month into his trip. But he's in heaven with me now, and very happy. We both miss you, but we know you'll come be with us one day. Today's just not that day."
Sephira looked up at her mother with a saddened smile, "T-that's good. I'm glad you're both happy. Tell daddy I'm sorry when you go back, okay?" Her mother nodded and then pulled away from her. "I also came here to warn you. Bad things are beginning to unfold here in Shelpey. I was also a shifter. You're father knew from the day you were born there was a chance you would take after me."
Sephira shook her head, trying to process everything her mother was telling her. "The scientists have known about you since the day you first shifted. I hate having to say this to you, but you have no choice but to continue running. Even being here in the hospital isn't safe. As soon as you're able, you must leave here or they will find you and your friends." She began to fade away with her last sentence, her words echoing in the small rooms.
Sephira nodded and soon she was back in the darkness. But only until she began to slowly open her eyes, the light above her stinging her dry eyes. She was unable to talk due to the tube in her throat, but she put up with it since it was the only thing allowing her to breath without any problems. She looked over to Karla, gently placing her hand next to her forehead where she was struck in the car, a worried look on her face.

She explained it away. She let her gaze rest a long while on the girl and she still could not believe it. Xara stepped up reluctantly, placing her hand on Karla's shoulder and, thankfully, Karla looked up, smiling for lack of something better to do. "The doctor says you should be okay to go home," she explained to the patched up woman, "Tonight or tomorrow. Depending on your condition. I'm no doctor," she noticed the attentiveness of the girl with an emotionless expression, "But I think it'll be sooner than later." Karla's smile faded terribly at Xara's emotionless, masked voice, but it was laced with a bit of pain. She stood and faced her readheaded friend, who looked like a specter, Karla noticed now. She was pale as a sheet, making the dark marks under her eyes look even darker and her eyes had a dark light about them. Xara avoided eye contact this time, feeling a bit displaced and awkward, so she didn't see it when Karla latched onto her into a big, crushing hug. She gasped as the air was squeezed out of her, but chuckled and, after a moments hesitation, hugged back. "You're not going soft on me are you, Karla?" Karla chuckled, rubbing her friends back, drinking in her scent. It was comforting. "Maybe..." she pulled away, pleasantries put aside, and pitched her voice quite low, "I'm sorry. I left because I was fucking up your life and I thought that if I didn't talk to you you'd forget all about me and-"Xara frowned. "You're not fucking up my life, and I'll never forget you." she stared her down for a moment, and Karla avoided eye contact, "Now, I'm starving. I'll be back with some food, do you want some?" Karla shook her head, pulling away from Xara and rubbing her forehead with the palms of her hands, "No, thanks. Xara," she called as Xara began to leave the room. She turned back, "Do you think they'll, you know, try to find us?"Xara hesitated, "I hit three of their men, killed one, and drove off with their prize in the backseat of my car. I'd say they're out of their minds for trying, but, yes, they'll be back." she flashed Karla a crooked smile, "But you'll make it through. You always do." and disappeared. Karla stood there, still, for a moment, staring after her, and then began to laugh. "She's starting to sound a helluva lot like me..." she said, turning back to Sephira, "How are you doing?"-- Xara walked back from the cafeteria, exhausted and content with a full belly. Karla seemed different. Tame. She'd played protector for Xara many times before but not like this. Though Xara and Karla were closer in age than Karla and Sephira were, and Sephira seemed a mite more fragile than Xara had been. Besides, she reflected, I had Max. Sephira has no one. Not to mention that Sephira had 'saved' her from the Subway. Xara sighed and shoved her hands in her pocket, her head heavy as the oppressing early morning light reminded her scathingly of how long she'd been out. She smirked. Max would not be impressed. She rounded the corner- there were the scientists. "That bitch killed Joe," one said, "and they think Greg might be paralyzed." the other men ground their teeth in fury, and Xara scooted behind the wall again, and made as if to be reading a poster on self help when they walked by, sporting their science logo plastered on their white shirts. "Don't worry," one said, perhaps the leader, "We'll get her, and kill the two bitches she's hiding behind too." Spehira. Her heart raced and she walked briskly to the elevator, pressing the button at least fifteen times in rapid succession, hopped into the elevator, and emerged on the right floor, making a painful point of not running. They needed to get out. [/blockquote][/ul]

She tried to make a smile, but the tube in her throat was making that difficult. They had fixed her punctured lung and pinned her rib back to her ribcage, but the tube made it easier for her to breath. Although, as time passed she soon was able to breath on her own. She watched as a doctor made his way in with a nurse, "Well, your vitals are stable so we're going to attempt to take the breathing tube out, alright? Now, when I pull this out, I want you to cough as loud as you can and then take a deep breath right after." She nodded and did as he told her, coughing and taking a deep breath as he did so.
The breath of air she made on her own was one of relief. It felt so good to have that thing out of her finally. It was a bit painful even with the pain medicine pumping through her veins, but it felt better than the tube. The doctor smile at her, "Well, your vitals are still good. Your blood pressure looks a tad bit elevated, but you should be fine. We'll have a nurse come back in another few hours to take your blood pressure and if it all looks good, you can go home." He said in an enthusiastic tone as he turned and exited the room.
Sephira smiled and waved as he left and then looked to Karla, "I'm glad you're alright. I saw my mom. She told me she was also a shifter. Unfortunately, that's how the scientist know who and what I am. She also said dad was with her..." Her eyes stung as she fought back a tear, "But it's okay, cause I know where he is now. I know he didn't hate me now." She kept her voice down to a whisper as she spoke, although it was difficult to talk as it was anyway just having that thing taken out of her throat just now. Her voice was a bit raspy, but it didn't bother her much.
"She also told me that we need to get out of here as soon as possible. The bad men, the scientists, they won't give up looking for us so easily." She sat up and started moving her legs, trying to stretch them out so she would be ready to move soon.
Looking back over at Karla, a happy smile making its way across her face, she whispered gently to her, "Thank you. You and your friend, Xara. You both saved my life." She brought the woman into a hug, the tear she tried holding back so hard earlier making its way down her cheek. It was a tear of joy, not of sadness.

she leaned in closer to whisper to the girl as if it were a big childhood secret, "I am part wolverine."Xara's footsteps filled the room and Karla smiled wolfishly, throwing an arm around her friend as she came to stand beside her. "And this ruthless bad ass..." she nudged Xara light heartedly, happy, for the first time in a long time. It made Xara smile, but reluctantly. There was the Karla she yearned for. "Well, you should have seen her driving! It was incredible."Xara shrugged in mock modestly, "I do what I can." Karla clicked her tongue disaprovingly, "What would Max say?" Xara blushed scarlet and Karla turned to Sephira, her joy overwhelming her old self into existence. Making awkward situations was what she lived for. "Her main squeeze." Xara turned with a disgusted sigh, though a girlish smirk crossed her face as she thought of him. Karla turned on Sephira, "What about you? Got a boyfriend? Husband? Fiance? Glorified fuck buddy? what? Tell me everything..."" Karla!" Xara gasped, dismayed, and threw her hands up, shaking her head "I'm not with her. I don't know who the hell she is...." she rambled on and turned to lean up against the door-frame, inconspicuously keeping watch. Inside, she was freaking. Karla stuck her tongue out at her friend. No, she thought as she awaited Sephira's reply with a gigantic, shit-eating grin on her pale face, You most definitely saved me. she frowned inwardly, disappointed in the cheesiness that just came out of her brain. You are a sap....[/blockquote] [/ul]

Sephira giggled as Karla picked on Xara, until the woman turned on her. The onslaught of questions confused her, "U-um...I don't know what you mean by all that...but I guess I would say no if I did." She choked out with a small smile. She turned to let her legs fall over the side of the bed, her bare feet touching the cold floor. It was at that point she noticed that they had taken her clothes off and replaced them with nothing but a hospital gown, "Oh my, I feel...exposed." She blushed a deep red. It was completely open in the back, they hadn't bothered to tie it up yet.
She reached back and held it shut as she slowly pushed herself off the bed and slowly began to stand on her own, using the pole with her IV pack to keep her upright. She stood there for a moment, feeling so much better being able to stand on her own again.
After a few minutes, she gathered up the courage to make her way to the bathroom, reassuring the two women that she was okay if they started to worry. She closed the door behind her and went to relieve herself. It had been a while since she had a chance to actually do so.
(XD lol Sephira needed a potty break...)

she muttered simply. Xara's lips pursed. "They're here." The black haired woman's ice blue eyes widened, then narrowed. "Thats no good."Xara squeezed her eyes shut with a chuckle and, again, shook her head. "Where is this coming from?" "Where's what coming from?"Xara gave her a long, slow look, and Karla sighed. "I don't know. I'm just...happy. Glad that you don't completely hate me, for starters..."Xara frowned, "Well I never said that." and grinned at Karla's distraught face. "I'm kidding," she said, pulling her into a hug. Karla had been getting lots of hugs lately, she noticed without a hint of disapproval as she hugged back. This time Xara meant to hug her. Not that before she'd hugged her by accident, it's just now it was...meaningful. "Karla I've missed you. I've been worried to tears about you. Don't you ever think, for one moment, that I hate you." Karla nodded stiffly and a heavy silence rested on their shoulders before Karla wiped her eye again. "They called it 'Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome', and they said I needed to get back into my life. I thought my own apartment and a steady job would help but," she shrugged helplessly, "Maybe I needed to get back on the ol' wild stallion of a horse.""It can't be a healthy obsession..." Xara noted jokingly, "But it seems like you're going to be getting all of the old life you want now." Karla looked back to the bathroom door nervously, "I don't know if she should be seeing anymore action for a long while. I'm worried that she's going to get all...like...you know...""Suicidal." Karla nodded and Xara sighed, "We wont let her. Trust me, it will be okay." No, no it wont, she thought darkly. But Karla seemed comforted, and Xara knew that the layer of the true Karla that had grown back was thin and fragile and if it was broken again it would never grow back. That alone terrified the red-headed woman. But Karla seemed confident. [/blockquote][/ul]

Sephira finished doing her business and walked over to the sink to wash her hands. As she reached for the small white towel nearby, she noticed the tiny red dots from where the blood was slowly seeping through the bandage on her side. She lifted up her gown and looked down at the semi-red bandage that was over the incision they had made to fix her rib and lung.
"That bad, huh?" She breathed as she gently poked it a few times before letting her gown flop back down and headed back for the door. She stopped for a moment, waiting for their voices to die down, not that she could eavesdrop through the door, it was too thick and muffled their voices, before opening the door and walking back out.
She slowly made her way back over to her bed, sitting down on the edge of it, not wanting to lay back down, "We need to get out of here soon. If we don't, there's a chance they already know we're here." All emotion fled her face, replacing seriousness in its stead. It was her first time here in the hospital, and she already wasn't too fond of it. A smile lit her face back up, "Besides, I'd really like a shower and they don't have one here." She giggled, scratching her head, trying to lighten the mood.
