Ian was a laid back guy, not really aggressive, or kind, or sensitive, or sweet, or any of those really. But of these, nor was he exactly the brightest crayon in the box, mild colors were his choosing anyway. Bland wasn't always good, but then again it's not always bad. Sure it wasn't bright or flashy nor did it stand out, but it wasn't exactly bleak and invisible. It was mild. In between. Just enough to stick into the crowd, somehow to not feel different and weird.
Just as the reason he chose not to shift much. But through all his blandness, Ian however, was observant and certainly didn't miss the way the frown didn't fit the kid's face, or that her eyebrows narrowed down in thought, or that she didn't exactly look at him when she was in thought, or the fact that her forehead wrinkled up in some emotion that he couldn't quiet place.
Silent as a mouse--he inwardly twitched, humor not exactly his thing, he eyed her, studied her reaction to his words. Maybe Ian wasn't exactly sympathetic, but he certainly did not find it very well to have on his internal record that he was rude to someone, nonetheless a child! Besides, it didn't seem she was doing anything wrong... well, ignoring that part that she snuck into his car Yet as he spoke, it seemed she broke out of her thoughts, however... unusual they might be, and grinned up at him--back to her old self it seemed.
"Oh no Mister Hayes. It took my Mama and Papa quite a while to get here. It's the first time they've let me explore the city on my own. We live out in the country! The city is so closed in, but there are so many new nooks and crannies for me to hide in!" One of Ian's eyebrow rose up in suspicion. Her story was realistic, and it could have well been, he wouldn't have been surprised honestly, not that he voiced this, yet... explore the whole city on her own? He had to admit, Shelpey Alley wasn't the biggest town in the world, but it was sure dang big for a kid her age--what about 10 or 11, to be wandering around. His mind tumbled over the thought of what her parents were even thinking.
As he was thinking, the girl, no... Adina, started up again. It seemed her talk was never ending! In a way, she reminded him of the waitress, Hannah... he scowled just at the thought."Mama said to be ready to go by 2:00 by the Cafe. But until then she said I could run around, as long as I remembered the rules." He sighed lightly, at least glad that she knew what to do... and the rules. Yet, hopefully she would listen to them... and remember them. Even so, what if something happened...? He scowled to himself and shook his head, turning back to Adina he opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by her list of rules... a big list... of rules.
He stared slack-jawed at her grinning, child self, completely ignorant of his stares it seemed. Eventually... eventually, the list ended. As soon as she stopped, Ian shut his mouth, realizing how rude he was, and how silly he looked like. He sat in his seat, one hand relaxed on the top of the steering wheel as he looked down at her. Suddenly her mouth popped open, ready for another, most likely, long explanation. He wouldn't be surprised if it was completely off topic. Before she could get anything out though he blinked and quickly cut in, hand held up in an exasperated gesture, "Woah woah woah. Hold on there now."
Waiting for her attention, which however odd she might be, he was sure to get, Ian went on, "That's nice and all, and I sincerely hope you follow them..." He trailed off, eying her. He really did not want the fact that a kid might have been killed, lost, or hurt if he had anything to know about it, "Even so, that's not exactly what I meant to get into... but! I meant to say, honest to goodness not meaning to sound rude, but if you were in here the whole time... which I'm under the impression that you are, you would know that I do have somewhere to go... right?" He had no doubts that the mouse shifter didn't here his conversation... that's kind of why they had big ears... right?
