The temperature had dropped and a welcomed chill had entered the air. It was a beautiful morning, and sadly, Amgine had to admire its beauty from the confines of a sickly pale green classroom. She cursed herself internally for choosing today to start school.
She was a senior and had missed the first quarter of school due to the fact she had just moved here and wanted to get settled in. It wasn’t like she had to go to school, what with her dads’ body cooling down six feet under and her mother long gone; she didn’t really have anyone to make her. That’s the thing though, she wanted to go to school, and she loved to learn. Not that she was a brainiac or anything, she just liked books, and art, and even math, but she hated history. As luck would have it, she had European History first period, and try as she might she just couldn’t focus on what the teacher was saying . . . hell she couldn’t even remember the teachers name. The equine shifter sighed and shook her foot; she was feeling restless and needed to get outside soon. Her grey blue eyes darted anxiously to the clock, one more minute of this torture and then she was off to . . . she looked at her schedule. Ah, Creative Writing, her favorite class.
Amgine sighed with relief as the bell rang and stood, gathering her books, not bothering to put them in her backpack. She stumbled out into the hallway, cradling her books with one arm, the other was pulling on her backpacks shoulder strap, adjusting it so it rested comfortably. She felt eyes on her; she was the new girl after all. She noticed the students looking at her, either glaring at her or appraising her, she didn’t like it, and so she cast her eyes downward, staring at her grey converse as they played peek a boo behind her blue jeans. Something made her jump, a hand had come down sharply on her bottom, and a male voice reached her ears “Nice ass bitch.” She looked to see who the hand was attached to. It was a beefy looking jock with a lusty leer on his face. She stopped in her tracks and looked him in the eye, raising on eyebrow
”I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure that was an oxymoronic statement, and I’m also pretty sure you need to remove your hand from my ‘nice ass’ or you’ll really see me turn into a bitch”
Her voice was hard and her face was a mask of seriousness. She waited for him to remove his hand, counting to three and breathing deeply. Did he listen? No, he simply gave her ass a hard squeeze and grinned at her “Did you just call me a moron, you little cunt?” an amused chuckle passed her lips as she shook her head.
”I didn’t have to apparently . . . but my guess is your mother never taught you manners. . .but I’ll give you two choices, either you remove your hand from my ass or I will. . .and trust me, you don’t want that. Three seconds to decide.”
She held up three fingers, ticking them off as she counted,
”Three . . . Two . . .”
For: Dean Muse: Alright Word count: 584 Outfit: HERE Notes: I know it’s kind of busy, and normally Amgine isn’t this aggressive. . .unless you piss her off. I would have had her punch the guy but I thought I should leave something for dead to jump into. . .I’d be happy to make any changes.

The Rustbucket had found it funny to make like a chimney (again) as he pulled out of the driveway that morning, and despite the fact that the air vents inside the car were closed, somehow the smell (and some of the awesome sooty-ness ) found a way to stick to him and his clothes. He had left his coat in the jeep for that reason, and he felt ridiculous without it. So with that great start, Dean had figured that the rest of his day would be along the same lines.
And--whadaya know-- he was right.
Dean was relatively new himself, and hadn't really applied himself enough to getting to know anyone. It was his last year in the public school system after all, and once you've seen one high school social structure, you've seen them all. He watched as the letter jacket clad lineman strutted down the cluttered hall, passing Dean without a glance. Not that Dean cared one way or the other. But the arrogant walk was leading him to a girl, and Dean didn't like the predatory look in the big brute's eyes. That, and the route that his day had taken so far, lead Dean to detach himself from the wall he was leaning on, shadowing the jock.
Sure enough, the monument to testosterone slapped his had on the girls...*ahem* posterior. Dean sighed.
"Sometimes it's almost if I'm psychic."
Then the sexual assaultee surprised Dean--she started to get on the offensive. She hadn't thrown a punch, or even said much in the way of harsh words as far as Dean was concerned, but her tone and body language spoke louder than any of the other things could. There was eminent violence. And a girl was on the receiving end in all probability.
Well, gee, what was Dean going to do?
He dodged and dipped quickly over to the pair, and stuck himself between the two. as he did he put one hand behind his back to gently push the girl slowly further behind him.
"Hey now there--" Dean said innocently as he looked down at the letter jacket. He stopped himself from rolling his eyes, but only just."--Spike. I was wondering, how do you get those nifty jackets? I've always thought I would look good in wool and Pleather."
Spike looked less than amused, but the big lug didn't look more or less of anything, really. He just looked at Dean saying, "Oh yeah?"
"Yeah", king of witty comebacks, that was Dean.
"Oh yeah?"
The two stared at each other for a second or two. the teenagers in the hallway started to give the three a wide birth.
Dean broke the silence first. "Alright, you caught me! I'm a scout for Notre Dame. You got heart kid, how soon can you be in Indiana?" That was better. Dean wise assness was picking up. In his defense it had been a long morning.
Spike kept staring. "Oh yeah?"
"Cold winters, but they've got a great public transit system."
Spike spat. "Yeah?"
"Yeah."
"Oh Yeah!?"
Dean paused, crossing his arms. "There's a thesaurus in the library, yeah's under 'Y'. Go ahead, I'll wait."
I guess the mention of a word longer than five letters broke something in the muscle head's brain. He growled--honest to goodness growled--and charged Dean.
Dean watched the whole spectacle, stepping to one side, letting the blockhead slam skull-first into the water fountain mounted on the wall. There was a meaty crunch and Spike was down for the count. Dean winced, his face forming an 'ooo, ouch' expression.
He finally turned to the--
Whoa.
Dean turned to the very very cute girl, giving a small smile, and simply saying:
"Dean Archer, excuse me, but seemed that you might've needed some..." he trailed off, glancing slightly back to Spikes groaning lump. He cleared his throat. "Uh. Hmm. Maybe not."
now he just felt pompus and a little lame, but hell--
What else was new?

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/Thoroughbred_cutie77/headerdos_03.gif] She curled her hand into a fist, ready to knock this guys lights out, but just before the word ‘one’ passed her lips the back of another male figure filled her vision and she had to stop herself mid swing to avoid clocking him in the back of the head. She felt his hand on her, pushing her behind this faceless vigilante. It took her a moment to realize she was mad about not being able to punch this douche bag of a jock in the face. Her face turned in a scowl as she stared daggers at the back of the males head . . . who the hell did he think he was anyway? She could take care of herself.
The two men were bickering . . . ok, not bickering per se. It was more like watching two tweeny bopper girls fight, the exchange of ‘oh yeahs’ was becoming monotonous and Amgine simply watched the two of them go at it. The new comer changed his tone, taking on the same sarcastic approach Amgine had. "There's a thesaurus in the library, yeah's under 'Y'. Go ahead, I'll wait." she wanted to laugh, but a quick glance at Spike told her to get the hell out of the way. See, Amgine was quite most of the time, and when you don’t talk a lot you can either be oblivious to the rest of the world or you can observe. She had chosen the latter and had become quite proficient at reading body language and small facial signs. Meat head here was about to attack, she saw his shoulders hunch slightly and his feet twitch, then he growled . . . ohh scary.
She moved quickly, watching as the jock ran right into the water fountain. That was a simple law of physics, the bigger the mass, the harder it is to stop, in this case, it worked in her favor. She stared at the bulk of unconsciousness for a moment and turned back to the other guy, making sure to give him her infamous glare. She was not happy about not getting to punch him. She was ready to let this guy have it, but when he turned to face her she noticed him falter for a moment, and she let her grey blue eyes thaw a bit. "Dean Archer, excuse me, but seemed that you might've needed some…Uh. Hmm. Maybe not." She let a corner of her mouth turn up into a smirk.
Hmm, and here I though chivalry was dead. Well Dean Archer, I was doing fine on my own, seriously, the asshole was about to go down.
She let out a small laugh and ran her fingers through her light brown locks she thought for a moment, maybe she should give this boy a chance, after all he put forth a valiant effort to keep her out of harms way. She sighed, slightly defeated.
But, I guess I should thank you. I mean, fighting on your first day of school does not give a good first impression. I’m Amgine Carter, and if you grab my ass I’ll more than likely break your nose.
She was half joking, and she gave him a sheepish grin to let him know she wasn’t entirely serious.

It was safe to say that he liked Amigne almost instantly. Wit was a spare commodity these days, and especially when paired with guts. Dean wagered that she had both in spades.
"I'll keep that in mind." He looked around them, where some students had stopped to gawk at the still downed Spike. "It's nice to meet you Amigne, but I think we better get gone. It looks like people are starting to notice the absence of Spike's awe-inspiring presence." Dean could see heads starting to whip around, obvious signs of a teacher approaching.
He turned back to Amgine, "Mind if I walk with you? I promise to keep my hands were you can see them." He smiled facetiously, holding up his hands to show there were no weapons.

She was studying him of course, like she did with everyone. She noticed the smirk planted on his face, it wasn’t a smug look though, more . . . surprised . . . maybe respect? She moved her gaze to his eyes, they were the color of sapphires and held the same quality and richness the gem did, they were guarded though, mysterious and closed off. She held his gaze after her little warning, daring him to say something stupid. "I'll keep that in mind." she gave a nod and watched as he looked around. A quick glance around told her they were attracting far too much attention, and the sudden wave of panic that passed through the student body told Amgine that trouble was coming and it was more than likely a teacher.
"It's nice to meet you Amigne, but I think we better get gone. It looks like people are starting to notice the absence of Spike's awe-inspiring presence." she let out a small laugh at this remark, enjoying Dean and his humor. "Mind if I walk with you? I promise to keep my hands were you can see them." She look up at him again and smiled.
I’ll hold you to that Mr. Archer, and as long as you don’t mind if our walk happens to lead us off campus and to the coffee shop? I think I need to take a mental health day, let my brain recover from Spikes onslaught of profound analogies, but I’d be more than happy if you’d accompany me.
She didn’t normally skip school, but something told her she didn’t want to stick around for the rest of the day. She started towards the front entrance glancing over her shoulder to see if Dean was following.

He would usually cut for good reasons--Job offers, helping someone, Sleeping. You know, the important things. So when Amgine proposed going to get coffee, Dean didn't hesitate. He returned the smile, ushering her towards one of the side exits.
"After you."
The minute warning bell rang, snapping the student spectator traffic that had gripped the scene behind the pair back to the real world. Or at least high School. Which is loosely based on the real thing.
Dean turned back one last time to look at Spike, who had finally opened his eyes. He glared at Dean...well, he was glaring at somebody. One eye was black and purple, swollen shut, the other was vaguely focused in Dean's direction. Dean decided to err on the side of annoyance, waving back to the brute petulantly as the afore-mentioned teachers made it to the downed football star. He had the feeling that things were far from over with Spike, but when he turned back to Amigne, he didn't seem to mind all that much.
They got to the push bar doors, Dean subtly lengthening his strides to get there first. it was something he always did when he was walking with a woman. It had nothing to do with the fact that Amigne was cute and that she intrigued Dean somewhat.
Honest.
He opened the door into the harsh morning light. Dean always thought that was the measure of how long you shouldn't of stayed indoors. The more the light hurt your eyes, the more you should of been outside. Dean had been in too long, the sun hit his face without mercy, making the shifter hold up a hand to cover his eyes. Dean was not a morning person. Coffee seemed to be a really good idea.
"Well, it seems we have a tiny walk ahead. So how did you find your way into trouble this early in your stay? Is this a regular thing, or do I not have to worry about sweet-talking guys with necks the size of my thigh every ten minutes?" He was just joking of course, but if they were going to spend any length of time together she needed to get used to Dean's not so refined humor. [/scrolly]

He had to be at least six foot if not more. Amgine, being 5’7” didn’t have to look too far up but he definitely wasn’t eye level. He had moved slightly ahead of her, towards the doors and she looked over her shoulder and noted that Spike was now awake and being attended to. He was of course glaring at them both, and Amgine had the urge to flip him the bird, but the presence of teachers made her curb her very unladylike gesture. She simply shrugged at the brute and turned her attention back to Dean. A smile crept onto her face as she saw him holding the door open.
“You are a rarity Dean Archer”
This was her way of saying thank you of course, and her tone was praising and sincere. She stepped passed him and into the sunlight. She had to squint as she felt the muscles behind her eyes tighten as her pupils contracted, adjusting to the light. She took a deep breath of fresh air, feeling suddenly energetic. The sun was getting high and warming the air. Amgine relished the warmth, shrugging out of her leather jacket, revealing her dark gray tee. The cotton material clung to her shoulders which were broader than the average teenage girls. Some people joked that she looked the like offspring of an Olympic runner and swimmer. She had long legs and a lean body; this was of course not because she played sports. It was because she was a horse shifter. A thoroughbred to be exact, built for racing with their long legs and muscled shoulders, the true athletes of the horse world. She slung her jacket over her arm and turned to Dean, her eyes bright with excitement.
"Well, it seems we have a tiny walk ahead. So how did you find your way into trouble this early in your stay? Is this a regular thing, or do I not have to worry about sweet-talking guys with necks the size of my thigh every ten minutes?" She laughed, and looked up at him with a cheeky grin.
Oh? You didn’t guess? I like my men stocky, meaty and brainless… she batted her eyelashes in false innocence. She was all sarcasm on this one of course. Seriously though, you don’t have anything to worry about, people tend to give me a wide berth.
She offered him a small smile and cast her eyes straight ahead. She chewed on the inside of her lip, right where her shifter mark was located. She didn’t really talk to many people, she was guarded and knew that she put off that exact energy. She had the whole untrusting demeanor going on and so far it had done its job at keeping everyone at bay, but sometimes she wished she could be close to someone, only sometimes. She glanced up at the boy that had probably saved her from suspension, he was handsome and very witty, which she thoroughly enjoyed, and he seemed sweet too which was rare in this town. It seemed everybody was out to get everybody.
So, Dean, that was some pretty smooth talk back there…you break up fights often?
She smirked, her sarcastic guard was up but she wasn’t sure for how long.

Dean could empathize with Amgine on that. He was used to the fact of staying solo, and more than often he didn't mind it all too much. At least, he could usually. It seemed as if Dean was attracting more and more trouble as the days went on here in this new place. Not counting the morning's events. He simply nodded at his tanned Converse, keeping pace with Amgine.
So, Dean, that was some pretty smooth talk back there…you break up fights often?
Dean fought the urge to shoot her a wry smile, instead just shaking his head and chuckling softly to himself.
"All too often." He shrugged. "Although I must admit, its usually isn't this fun, and I've never scored the company of such a lovely lady such as yourself as a result." He paused, thinking for a second.
"Come to think of it, I'm usually either running or nursing a broken something--or--other by now." Dean turned to look at Amgine--
"I uh...Lead a rather...interesting...and--at times, inappropriately exhausting--life."
Dean pulled himself back out of his own thoughts, eyes and voice brightening with the steadily shining sun."Enough about me though, how about you? How did you find this little piece of..." Dean trailed off, looking to find the right word, unable to say 'heaven' or 'shit' convincingly enough. "Well piece of something anyway."

She didn’t. She gnawed nervously on the inside of her lower lip and swallowed her insecurities. She ran her hand through her hair and looked over at Dean, changing the subject and patiently waiting for the answer. All too often…Although I must admit, its usually isn't this fun, and I've never scored the company of such a lovely lady such as yourself as a result she gave him a rolled her eyes in mock annoyance but felt a blush creep to her cheeks. Come to think of it, I'm usually either running or nursing a broken something--or--other by now. she shook her head and laughed then looked over at him, only to find him looking back. I uh...Lead a rather...interesting...and--at times, inappropriately exhausting--life. she raised an eyebrow and gave him a disbelieving smirk.
Sounds like you’re a modern day James Bond…don’t worry…I won’t tell a soul.
She winked and then ran her fingers over her lips, pretending to zip her mouth shut. Amgine kept her eyes trained on him for a moment longer then looked forward, noting they still had a few blocks to go. She let out a small, happy sigh, and craned her neck to look up at the sky, a smile spreading across her lips as she inhaled the sunshine and fresh air. It was a beautiful day. Her head snapped back to place as Dean started speaking Enough about me though, how about you? How did you find this little piece of...Well. little piece of something anyways She looked at him and felt her smile fall until it was a mere upturned corner of her mouth. She looked straight ahead and thought for a moment, pursing her lips, she felt the sadness come to her eyes and she did her best to hide it. What was she going to tell him exactly…that her father died and had made plans for her to come here if that ever happened…that it was her fault she was here…that he was dead. She felt like she could tell him, in this small amount of time she felt like she could tell him anything. She looked over at him, and for a brief moment, let her guard down, she let her feeling of grief and guilt and overwhelming sadness rise to the surface and then she shoved them back down again, knowing they would break her.
I guess you could say it was an improvised trip, I just needed a change in scenery…England was getting too gloomy for my taste…what about you?
She smiled a bit, and let her native British accent slip a little. She had been working on her American accent for years and had perfected it. When she arrived here she had chosen to do her best to blend in…and what wouldn’t help was having an accent. Soon it had become second nature and she didn’t have to think about it anymore.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/ad340/Toki_Graphix/Posting%20Tables/Dean---Body.png][scrolly:h(320),w(340),sy] Dean laughed when Amgine called him James Bond. He had to admit, there were times where he felt as if he got into as much trouble. Dean never got the girl though, he was usually just happy to not get his ass beat.
There's a thought, Dean said to himself, 'not' getting sucker punched by someone for a change. He continued to think about it for a second.
It happened a lot.
More often than not actually.
Dean sighed, making a mental note to not lose as many fights in the future. Who knows? Maybe I could really turn out to be like Jame Bond.
Yeah Right.
When Dean pulled himself back to the conversation to hear Amgine's response, he noticed something different in the young woman's demeanor. She seemed to go off into her head for a second, lost in thought maybe. She pursed her lips as she did, and Dean couldn't help but notice how appealing it made them look. He shot an accusatory look downward, glaring at the culprit. This was not the time for his oh--so--annoying libido to 'perk' up, so to speak. He pulled his mind (and everything else) out of the proverbial gutter and focused on Amgine the person instead.
Dean knew the look well. It wasn't that Amgine was transparent or making sure that Dean saw the change, it was just a familiar look to him. You see something enough times and it stops looking odd.
It was the look of someone with something in the past that refuses to stay there.
Her eyes were shadowed while she was shifting through her own thoughts. She stared straight ahead without focusing on anything, fighting something inside, Dean empathized (or maybe projected). Inside where the nightmares and haunting memories played back in a constant loop. Inside where all the demons and worst sides of yourself whispered temptations of things you ought to not do. Inside where you continually beat yourself up for the things you failed to do.
Dean wasn't psychic, he had his own relentless memories to trudge though on the off night.
Then she seemed to steel herself away, deciding on a course of action.
"I guess you could say it was an improvised trip, I just needed a change in scenery…England was getting too gloomy for my taste…what about you?"
Dean wasn't slow, he had dodged questions quite frequently, and could tell that Amgine had done the same. He didn't push though. Frankly, it was none of his business.
He returned her wink from what seemed minutes ago, "Oh you know how it its. Being a ward of the state tends to make one highly...mobile.
"I wore out my welcome with my last foster family. For some reason they didn't appreciate their car "mysteriously" crashing into a burning building."
He paused, and without looking to see her reaction, rushed out,
"It was like that when I got there. Dead Poets Honor."
A Thousand sorrys! i kept sitting down to write this and got distracted. No reason for it to take over three weeks but i hope the length makes up for it.
SORRY! :( [/scrolly]
