Age: We have a lot of teens right now. Remember, being middle-aged or old is NOT a bad thing
Gender: ---------
Orientation: Eh, whatever here. Hetero, homo, bi or asexual.
Guild: ------------
Shapeshift Form: -------------------------------
Appearance:
1) Nothing is wrong with being a human. You don't need to be a shifter.Personality:
2) Nothing is wrong with having an odd shifter form. Not everything needs to be a cat or dog or bird. Seriously, look at that list right up there! There's so many to choose from yet we mostly consist of birds, dogs or cats. Get creative!
3) I'm partly to blame for this too, but we have a lot of cookie-cutter character types right now. Female and tomboy, looks pretty. Female and girly-girl, looks pretty. Male who looks harmless. Male who looks like he's about to break your face in.
Let's try and get away from this for a bit. Nothing is wrong with having a character who's fat. Nothing is wrong with having a character who suffers from a physical illness or disease that leaves them with blemishes. If anything we want to encourage characters who aren't pretty or aren't handsome! We have too many ones who are!
4) Similar to the above note. It's honestly okay to be an average character.
1) People only have one personality unless they suffer from one of a few mental disorders. People can try to be like another person but in times of severe stress or upset they're probably only ever going to be themselves. Stop with the needless-two-personality disorder.History:
2) It's fine to be average in this category too. Enough with the asshats, enough of the clinically insane, enough of the as-far-from-average-as-you-can-get, please. Let's see some average characters. Average people who aren't always hyper or bubbly or constantly shy and don't talk much or are clinically insane and need help. We have too many.
3) Check and double-check to make sure your character is balanced. Mary-sues are shot on sight and survivors are shot again. People have their good points, and they have their flaws. Some people's good points are a double-edged sword and act as a flaw, too, depending on the situation.
4) Be realistic. It kind of ties in with all of the above, but seriously. How many people in today's world are actually all born brawlers with mental problems who like to fight and never do anything else? Yeah, not that freaking many.
5) Be creative. Tie in your character's history with their personality for a realistic character who has a lot of depth and who has, like we all end up, been shaped by their background, their upbringing and the events of their life.
1) Be realistic. I get so angry when I see people claiming a six year old character fell in love with another guy, because no they bloody don't. At six years of age a person has just completed their love map. This means that they will recognise and become attached to family. This is also why children who are kidnapped before they are five or six, and kept away from their family for years, are liable to never recognise their parents. That's right folks. It takes six years for you to mentally, fully comprehend just who your family is.Sample:
With this in mind, don't spew shit in your history. (Vulgar, but I can't express it any other way.) I don't care if you think it's fact, you damn well check if you aren't sure if it could even happen.
On the note of be realistic, how many rape victims do you actually know? How many friends do you have who witnessed their family murdered? How many people in your street were molested when they were small and ran away from home?
What's that? Barely anybody? Nobody, you say? There's a reason for that. Stop with all the god damn sob stories please because we have so many of them it's enough to make me punch a bloody baby. I don't care how cool it is to have a character who rapes or was raped, or was abused or ran away from home at the stupid age of seven or whatever the hell, it stops. Seriously. It's not cool. In fact we have so many of these sort of stories on Shelpey at this point it's downright annoying.
I'm going to be honest with every single one of you. If I see another rape or murder in a history for the next several characters I'm going to instantly deny them on the grounds of sob story. Enough is enough.
Sample here of what you can genuinely write on average. Don't give us a long five paragraph sample to let us accept you but then only ever post two paragraphs. We appreciate honesty.Other:
Take heed.
