Shelpey Alley is a literate site, so we look for detail and description. Dialogue is encouraged, but we don't want to see your posts be either half dialogue or mostly dialogue. To help with this, think of the things you would notice if you were outside. The setting / place: Trees? Lakes? Wind? Describe how those looks. Is it a nice feeling? Does it remind you of anything (Try not to put too much fluff. Fluff = unneeded text. We don't need to read 5 paragraphs about how your character saw a white flower and how white reminds her of her dead brother who died in snow. 8U) Also remember the 5 senses: taste, hear, smell, sight, feel, or maybe your character has a 6th sense such as intuition.
You can also describe what your character thinks: reactions. Don't just ignore what another character says. Maybe your character reacts to it. For me, I find it helps if I repeat in my post what the other character said. For example:Say Kitten says: Kitten smiled at her new friend, "Greetings, Amber, how are you?" Then after her post, I would write:"Greetings Amber, how are you?"Kitten lightly smiled in warmth. Amber, smiling back at Kitten's friendliness, replied. "I'm doing fine, busy with guild business, you know."
Of course the way you choose to code (or not code) the post is your choice. Just a suggestion, but re-writing what other characters say previously helps members recognize what is said and at what point in time. It also helps you, as a role player, bring out emotions, reactions, and thoughts of your character to what other characters say.
If you're having trouble on what you want your character to do, to bring the role play forward, is think of a plot before hand. What do want to happen at the end of this role play. Is your character going to make a friend? A boyfriend / girlfriend? A rival? Enemy? Try to keep it away from saying hi, and then "taking a walk" or some other. Maybe your character becomes suspicious from another character. Or maybe your character was already headed somewhere, and they're trying to get away. Maybe it's the opposite and your character just won't stop bugging the other character, whether its for company or maybe to go on a date.
