This was it. All the planning and preparations had led her up to this point. As soon as she stepped foot across that pavement, there was no turning back. No escape. She peered her head upwards, scanning her green pigmented eyes across the faded letters on the front of the building. Only two words were clearly unmistakable in her vision: high school. She almost shuddered at them. For most teens, high school was the dark dungeon of their lives; a place where stress had taken its origin. In her two and a half years of this so called prison, Audrey had so far not experienced all that much pressure. She even found school to be enjoyable. Of course, she had spent those years in a familiar region; a place she'd grown up in and had made a couple close friends. This place was nothing of the sort. She'd moved into the city with her family only a week ago, the final move in their several month process. It had been strenuous and she wished she could say they were settled down. But she was far from it. In lack of better terms, she greatly disliked it here. Audrey could not say she truly hated it, because she barely knew the city, but she certainly was not comfortable. She had always despised city life so moving to one had certainly not been at the top of her to do list. She supposed the great root of her dislike of the move was leaving behind the life she had in the country. Although her body was here, her heart would always lay in the wilderness.
Blinking away memories of her past, she fixed her gaze towards the entrance of the school, seemingly empty and dark looking. She clutched at the sides of her backpack turning her knuckles white and inhaling a deep breath, made her first steps towards the awaiting doors. It had taken quite a bit of effort to take that first step and in all her anxiousness, she felt her reluctance begin to dissipate with every step. The uneasiness she had felt standing in the bustling courtyard was slowly being replaced with a strange excitement, a tingling in her stomach that she found rather irritating. She made her way through the bustle of students now hurrying to make it to class and before she knew it, she was standing before the great doors. Extending a hand, she reached for the metal handle and pulled it open, revealing the crowded halls of a typical academy. So far so good. Releasing the breath she didn't know she was holding, the young girl made her way through the crowds. As soon as she was inside, the golden haired teen pulled out a crumpled sticky note she had been keeping preciously in the pocket of her denim capris. Fidgeting with it, she looked down once more at the instructions before heading on her way. As she walked the halls she couldn't help but keeping looking at the inscription for reassurance, as if it would suddenly change -even though she had long had it memorized- as she kept glancing up at the different signs and doors along the walls. Finally, she reached her destination: principle's office.
Making her way inside, Audrey felt the sudden change in ambience. It was uncomfortable. She shivered at the sudden change of temperature, certainly cooler than the throng of body heat bustling just outside. The office was eerily quiet, the only sound being that of the receptionist as she typed furiously at her computer at a wood desk and a ticking clock hanging from the wall, its pendulum swinging in beat. Facing the desk, there was an ugly looking couch where Audrey presumed the students would wait for their fate. The small room smelled unnatural and sterile, like that of a hospital rather than a school. She made her way towards the receptionist, flats clacking on the plastic tiled floor. The secretary, who Audrey assumed to be in her late fifties, didn't even glance at her approach.
"Ummm," Audrey murmured. Still no response. "Excuse me, I'm...", she was caught off as the woman raised her finger once before returning to her typing. Audrey had to wait another 20 seconds before the woman finally acknowledged her presence and looked up.
"What can I do for you?" she asked all too innocently after her previous rudeness.
"Hi", Audrey continued, "My name is Audrey Wildspur. I'm the transfer student."
The receptionist looked at her with a dubious glare before picking up a black phone and pressing a number for speed dial. The woman mumbled something inaudible before placing the phone back down and looking at the girl through her spectacles impassively.
"Please wait here for a moment", she stated before returning immediately to her computer. Audrey stood for a few moments in hesitation, unsure of how to respond. She looked suspiciously towards the couch on the other side of the room, pondering whether to sit upon it. After waiting for about a minute slightly impatiently, she made her way towards it. Setting her back down, she tried to get comfortable but whether it was from the lumpiness of the furniture or her own apprehension, it seemed impossible. Rather she sat at the edge, legs crossed. Audrey ran her slender fingers through her hair in an attempt to make it look decent in the time she had. Against her will, Audrey had woken up extremely early that morning to primp herself. Although she was a very self-confident person, first impressions were important. So before the sun had even decided to show itself, she'd taken the time to curl her hair fancifully and add light touches of make-up. Although the end result had turned out quite appealing, Audrey was not prepared to do this every day. The girl after all enjoyed her beauty sleep.
As the golden haired teen was straightening out her teal collared t-shirt, the door at the back of the room titled "Principle" creaked open. Audrey immediately stood up to face the man that stepped out. He was very average looking, slightly aging, smartly dressed. The one striking thing about the principle was his tie, which was so colorful and ornately patterned that she couldn't make it out. The man stood on the edge of the door frame in open invitation.
"Shall we?" he requested, arm open to show her into his neat office. Nodding her head, Audrey slung her backpack over her shoulder and briskly walked inside, followed by the man. The door clicked shut behind them leaving the small room quiet once more.
Audrey spent around 20 minutes conversing with the principle. She need to get acquainted with school policy, rules, school life, etc... The girl had already read the school handbook listing most of the basic guidelines, so that shortened the conversation by a few minutes. But because she was transferring in the middle of the school year, she needed to swiftly adjust to the fast paced program. She mostly sat quietly while the man lectured, taking sips every now and then of the strong smelling coffee. From his gestures, she could tell that he was rather strict of a principal, true to keeping students in line. However, he had a somewhat agreeable air about him that allowed her to relax to a certain extent. They had just finished talking about her schedule when the man with the colorful tie rose, coffee mug in hand.
"You have mathematics first", he said as she quietly rose to her feet, "Though by now they've started. I'll show you to your class."
With that they were out the door, past the little room where the secretary was still typing unfazed, he walking with long strides while she kept up at a brisk pace.
"Normally, we would have a tour lined up to show you around the school, but as that is not in order at this time, I would have a student direct you", he voiced in the long empty hallway, which seemed so much more vast without students packed within it. They finally stopped at a door labeled 2-b. The principle quickly secured his tie more tightly up his collar before knocking lightly at the door. Audrey's heart was pounding in her chest, anxiety rising so that it felt like a large hollow deep in her stomach. This was it. This is where it started. She fervently touched a spot on her shirt where an object of value lay concealed beneath in reassurance, the golden chain around her neck being the only indicator that there was such a hidden gem.
The principle pushed open the door before stepping inside. Audrey followed more slowly, palms sweaty, clasping her hands. She kept her eyes downcast, shy towards the students' eyes she could feel blaring into her as she walked into the brightly lit classroom. As she stood calmly by her guide, she turned her gaze upwards towards her future classmates, sitting quietly and attentive towards this newcomer. The attention surrounding her made Audrey feel uneasy but she kept her head held high nonetheless with a small smile, eyes gleaming in the fluorescent lights.
ooc- HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! WOOHOO 2010!!! In celebration: I finally posted! I feel this is a lot longer than it ought to be, but whatever, I enjoyed it. And it's not even done! I split this in half -more like 2 thirds- because I first want to see what reactions some of the students come up with. So until then, have fun partying in the new year -don't let my post disturb the fun! And I hope you like my charrie!
PS- I thought I'd explain the title cuz I think its quite ingenius ;D I noticed that 75% of the threads in this board have "an average day" in them, so I thought I'd mix it up. Aren't I creative?!
